Question Single PC Getting Garbage Internet

Hey everyone! I’m usually really good at fixing and problem solving but there is an issue I’ve been trying to fix for the last couple hours and it won’t budge.

My PC is getting roughly 1/100th of my internet speed. This issue started last night right as I was trying to purchase discord nitro. I didn’t think much of it, maybe the internet was just <Mod Edit>? So I went to bed. I woke up today and the issue still persisted, decided to check my phone and I saw it was working completely fine. Ran an internet speed test on my pc, my other pc & my phone. Only My PC was getting garbage internet.

I’ve tried pretty much everything I can do, went to the internet, searched up the issue, tried everything on the first page of that google search (forums, guides, etc.) Nothing seemed to work.

Now this is where it gets weird, I restored my PC to last week thinking, “okay well if something is wrong with my PC, I’ll just restore it and it should fix”, this did in fact NOT fix it and the issue still continued. So now I’m wondering if its an external problem?

Has anyone had this problem, if so, how did you manage to fix it? I’m still looking for ideas and I’ll retry some things I already tried.

Hardware specs including motherboard model and if you have an add in network card, the model of that as well?

Windows version AND if running Windows 10, build version?

Router model? Cable, DSL or satellite?

Advertised ISP connection package speed?

Have you looked in device manager to see if that network adapter is showing any issues?

Are you connected via ethernet/lan or wireless?

CPU: i9-9900k
Motherboard: Asus Z390-A Prime
GPU: RX 580 (Dont mind the bottleneck, donor card till i get an rtx)

No Network Card, just inboard one.

OS: Windows 10 Pro Version 10.0.19043

Router: D-Link (unsure of model #)

Sadly DSL due to living in a rural area.
Internet Speed: 20D 5U
(Getting that on phone, Pc getting 0.2-0.4D and 0.00 U)

No problems in device manager

I’m connected via Ethernet.

I need that exact build version in order to know if we have the right driver installed or not, because the LAN drivers for this board are different for different release versions of Windows 10 and what worked on one version will not work without problems on another version.

So again, enter "winver" without the quotes in any run or search dialogue box on the start menu and hit enter. It will be listed in the window that pops up. The number you listed above is not what is needed. I need to know if it is 20H1, 20H2, 21H1, 21H2, etc.

It is Version 21H1 (Os Build 19043.1466)

Ok, so first thing you probably want to do is complete the optional update to 21H2 before going any further with anything. In fact, that might take care of the problem all by itself although I kind of doubt it, but I'd highly recommend being on the latest build version which is 21H2.

Just go into Windows update and manually check for updates OR if the optional update is already showing just tell it to do it. I realize your connection is slow but the update isn't all that big so it shouldn't take TOO terrible long to do.

Also, are any of the other devices that connect to the internet also using ethernet or are they all using wireless connections?

Okay, I’ll try this.

And no, no other devices using ethernet. I could try on another pc tho!

Couple of things to try as well.

A different ethernet cable.

A different ethernet port on the router.

If none of those work, then after you update to the latest Windows version we will try installing the latest LAN driver for your board.

Then if that doesn't work, you can as a last ditch try another computer on there via ethernet to see if it has the same problem and if it does not, then I'd agree that maybe the network adapter on the board took a crap.

Also I did a try a whole different router (LTE Bell Hub) w a different land cable and I was still getting the same problem. The upload speed was 0, but the download looked a little bit better, like 1/3rd download speed

Okay little run down, I installed new bios & new windows updates. I had the bell hub plugged in because it was getting better download speeds. The problem looked like it was fixed (got reg download and upload speeds) Switched to my DSL internet, getting 0.06 Download but also got 0.06 Upload which is better than 0.

Update: Changing Ethernets cables or router port didnt fix it.

Ok. So you are on Windows 21H2 now? If you're not sure, run winver again and verify.
Yup I am on 21H2. Its definitely something with the drivers or ethernet settings for Internet 1 cos (things we have tested):

A: Not My Cable
B) Not my Router
C) Not my Motherboard/onboard Network Card.

  • Tested with a whole different internet connection (Internet 2) on my main pc (PC 1) and it worked perfectly fine.
  • Tested main internet connection (Internet 1) on my other pc (PC 2) and it worked completely fine.
  • Changed Cables.

So its something to do with Internet 1 & PC 1. Every other combination works. So most likely a driver or ethernet setting issue?

I have to leave for some work and won't be back until later, but in the meantime I would highly recommend that you install ALL of these drivers which are for your specific motherboard AND Windows version. Because more than just the driver for a given device can affect the driver for that device or the device itself, it would be good to install them ALL so that you know that none of THESE are where your problem lies.

LAN driver: https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/04LAN/DRV_LAN_Intel_I219_UWD_TP_W10_64_V1219137_20210830R.zip

Intel Z390 chipset driver: https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/...ons_RKL_TP_W11_64_V212010001085_20211022R.zip

Realtek audio driver: https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/..._UWD_DTS_HPX_TP_W11_64_V6092441_20211028R.zip

I would also highly recommend that you run full system virus and malware scans using Windows defender OR whatever it is that you have installed as the default antivirus/antimalware utility on your system. If you have ANY software of any kind that is, shall we say, "gray" as in it was obtained through less than legitimate sources, cracked, patched, too good to be true, etc., I would fully remove it from the system and then use the recommendations at the following link for a second opinion scanner to verify that it's actually gone.
