[citation][nom]themalaise[/nom]In another development, Barbie declares that "Math is hard!"[/citation]

Could you imagine the amount of work involved when "Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing" went global? omfg almost not worth the trouble! 😀

[citation][nom]amk-aka-Phantom[/nom]BTW, another load of BS! That's what DirectX is there for - it's a hardware abstraction layer; so when you make a game, you make it for DX, NOT for some "specific hardware configuration". Don't try to bull$h!t the enthusiasts, Bethesda![/citation]

@amk-aka-Phantom

You really, really, really, should try to educate yourself about how a game engine is designed and implemented. It's not all about DirectX ! If you really want to comment on game engine design and implementation you should at least try to roughly understand where Direct3D/OpenGL fits in an engine's architecture, then come back and we can have an interesting debate on this topic! until then, try not to reply to my comment I don't have time for someone who shouts "BS BS" out of his arse without actually knowing ANYTHING! thank you! have a nice study

[citation][nom]amk-aka-Phantom[/nom]It was the case with BF3. I really, REALLY hope ME3 will be ported properly... I hate hearing all this abysmal stuff about the menu being so console-oriented; it pissed me off in SW:TFU to the point where I dropped the game and never came back to it.It's just an excuse. They ARE getting lazy... Ever had a LEGO Mindstorms set? You can either program the robot using one of the existing program languages (I do it in Java) or use the toolkit that is made for young kids and consists of the blocks that you can drag together to make simple algorithms. Sure, the toolkit is much simpler, but the stuff you can pull off with actual programming is far, FAR superior. Now, the point of that analogy: modern game devs remind me of the kids who use this toolkit.[/citation]

oh boy! I'm trying so hard not to say anything!!!! ........ some kid with a little Java experience comments on game engines!! :|

Do they ever check the torrents out there? Every major console game is out there and ready to be pirated. The only reason PC gets more attention is that the userbase tends to understand these things more than console users. But I can almost guarantee you that Skyrim, and every other major title will be out there if they aren't already. Get over "piracy" myth with the PC and acknowledge that piracy is a problem across every platform out there.

skyrim is breaking the 200k player peak on steam. the highest i think i have ever seen on steam. They should just shut up about piracy, they are doing just fine.

Enlighten us 😀 Point is that Bethesda is FOS and other devs don't have that problem. DirectX IS an API that was made to resolve the issue of multiple hardware configs, and you cannot deny it.

I suggest you check Wikipedia for the concept of an analogy.

[citation][nom]evo_7[/nom]* There's also the assumption that you're making that some people actually update their drivers. Being a gamer doesn't equate to being knowledgeable about the stuff. I still encounter people every now and then who run a Windows XP service pack 1 and haven't done updates for several years on anything. When it comes to updated drivers for the GPU end, I still see it and they usually contribute it to the game rather than their hardware.* Good sales and/or a game doesn't imply little to no piracy. The basic model most people agree with that applies is when a title is highly anticipated and features good gameplay it sells very well and is equally as pirated as much. It's the same correlation for a movie; the more the movie sells the more it's pirated and why its no surprise Avatar is the most illegally downloaded movie. * I assume they could've just made it for console and not hear people whine as much and say to them to take aspirin as well and STFU.[/citation]

new drivres and updates from windows can break things. i use acdsee and apparently drivers from amd broke panning in the program.

[citation][nom]Zanny[/nom]This is tangental, but I would much rather devs write games for openGL rather than directX, so they can release them on OSX and Linux as well without almost any problems.I think the big problem is that when you develop a game for a console, you have to fine grain control every pixel buffer and bit of memory in the video card and system RAM because the resources are so constrained. When you go back to the PC, you forget that PCs are so much more powerful than consoles that using some abstraction layers like the SDL or OpenGL on top of standard library C functions is more than enough to get a game that will compile anywhere. They are so used to the overly complex development environment for consoles, where each platform must be built almost independently of one another because they have completely different architectures, they forget on the PC you can abstract away almost all of the platform dependencies.[/citation]

id rather see open gl because its as powerfull as dx11 but runs better.

[citation][nom]growup[/nom]Keep in mind that the graphics card wars help boost gaming back in the 90s for those developers complaining. The concept was simple, called effort in competing:3DFX started a rift that made all graphics card developers try to boost their capabilities to meet 3DFxs; however, many have tried and failed. Nvidia, ATI were the remaining forces since 3DFX went under. Without competition, the advances of gaming, hardware, etc. started to plummet. We've been on the XBOX 360/PS3 for a long while and no hardware advances until Unreal, Frostbite 2 and the Crytek engines appeared, thus making the console wars develop a new system. Hopefully people realize that we had a decade of graphics/console/engine boost back then and now we are at a halt because people's lack of interest in developing either a new engine/program/etc. to make another competition arise. Like the other post's mentioned; Either be lazy and just develop for the same console for the next 6 years OR develop a new engine that will revolutionize the gaming industry.[/citation]

it couldnt be the fact that we are in an area of diminishing returns, could it. where the power of the pc to push a game that is ground breaking is retardedly high.

untill we can do a full world tesslation in games, i am seriously doubting we should attempt to advance things to make them look better, and in stead try to make the things we already know play better on less.

[citation][nom]LORD_ORION[/nom]No, this is what happens when you develop for consoles and try to port to PC so you don't have to do as much work. Also, it is funny they are talking about piracy when Oblivion had no protection, yet still sold awesome on PC?[/citation]

Lol, not to mention skyrim was pre'd on wednesday for 360. I am more, and more, convinced that the piracy claim is a just a cop out excuse to explain to investors why train simulator 2011 didnt sell one trillion copies.

I am going to play, and enjoy skyrim; although the menus are the worst implementation I have ever seen, not only are they extremely consolized, but they are buggy to boot.

As you saw with Rage, all it takes is not releasing a beta for user testing. I really don't like the new philosophy of "get it out now and patch the game once were raking in the dough". I miss the days when games weren't rehashes or clones, mind you they had just as many bugs.

Nonsense. If a game is worth it, people will buy it. I remember taking a pirated version of Portal 2 (didn't know what it was about) from a friend who spoke of it highly...played through 5 rooms...realised i couldn't stop myself playing more...un-installed it...went and got the original...money well spent.

Now the only problem is i don't have a friend to play on steam with...random people arem't fun 🙁
So know i'm making him buy it too 😉

But yeah...as amk said, DirectX exists for a reason, and console games are pirated too. In India you can find pirated console games in a lot of places, and many people do something to the console to avoid activating it or something and play pirated games ONLY. I dont know how it works exactly, but i've heard enough of it.

And it's even more stupid that people here still don't buy original PC games since they're sold (legally) for $20 or less, while console games are sold for the standard $60.
But then again, most Indians think that all iDevices are completely made by apple (no third party involved), AMD procs overheat, CS is the best game ever, console graphics are better than PC graphics, 2GB cards are better than 1GB cards even if the 2GB card a 8500GT and the 1GB one is a GTX 580.

It's an exaggerated example, don't start correcting my VRAM quotations. 😛

Moral of the story is, release a demo (like in the old days, when the AoE II expansion demo had a sp and mp map) so people can test the game and see if they like it. I'm saying DEMO and not BETA btw.

Lol, I know some of these shops 😀 They have PC titles, too, but mostly football and cricket BS simulators.

And I totally agree about your comment on Indian people. No racism. Pure observation; they just need some more education.

P.S. AMDs DO overheat... jk

EDIT: $20 originals? No localization meddling? WHERE????! *Looks at Steam in RAGE*

another EDIT: I agree about demos. Back in the old days I tried Populous: TB demo and loved it so much I pre-ordered the game, which happens... well, almost never 😀

Okay I'm back and I bought the PC version :) Haven't played it yet, but I'm sure based on the reviews it's worth the $65 I paid for it (damn sales tax!)

At least it came with a nice map of the world on some thick map-like paper and a decent manual. There were only 3 copies of the game left when I bought it, which I was really surprised about. PC gamers are still out there, give us a game worth buying and we will buy it!!!

As a PC and mobile phone programmer for over 13 years I cannot tell you how much BS this is! PCs are one of the easiest platforms to develope for by far, just pick your target market and go with it.

I bet this Pete Hines has never seen a line of code in his life. Its hard enough trying to explain to a 'code monkey' how Async programming works. (Anyone remember those DOS TSRs or old style IRQs?)

Ive seen my fair share of lazy people in development teams, this Pete Hines would receive my middle finger if he tried to spray that BS in my office.

Sry Kevin (You didnt quote this so Im assuming this is your 2c) Piracy is not a "major factor in PC development", its a major factor in profit margins FOR ALL PLATFORMS and has nothing to do with development. Almost everyone I know with a console has had it "chipped" and IM SICK of people picking on PC with the attitude "Piracy has forced us to do sloppy ports and cut costs", you have to be kidding.

There is no excuse for laziness.

Exactly. Good to see there's some sense in people out there.

lmao that's fine. Indians are more racist about Indians than anyone else.

haha yes, the cricket sims! and friends used to offer me "Cricket WC 2002" and what not.

We have the same thoughts about steam, really no point for most of us. Most PC titles are launched for $20 except some big names like Halo 2, BF3 Ltd. Ed. which cost (Halo 2 when it released) about $30. EA India's Origin Store sells stuff at official Indian retail prices...i mean the MSRP-type thing, we call it MRP (max retail price)...but then origin feels...eww.

Prices fall till they're about $4. lol. E-tail stores like Flipkart sell stuff cheaper. I got ME 2 Ltd. Ed. (Cerberus Network one) for Rs.560 ($11 approx) a month ago. Origin sells it for 700 bucks ($14) i think.

Major exceptions are MW3 which they've decided to sell for $60 (MW2, before getting banned in India (Russia is an ally, i think that was the reason), sold for the usual $20), and the ME 3 pre-order which is for Rs.2000 ($40).

But well we get the shaft when it comes to electronics. Retail prices are 35 to 50% higher than the States, except (strangely) for Intel procs. Even more strangely, hard drive prices haven't risen the way they have in the US, Caviar Black's sell for $40 more only...not that $100+ BS on newegg...

Just to finish my price rant, that Llano A8 flagship sold for around $160 here, with the i3-2100 at about $115.

*sigh*. i have an exam in 6 hours. *must-shut-toms*.

I know all the prices BS, I live in India 😀 Don't agree about CPUs prices, Core i5 and i7-2600/K are like $50 overpriced here.

Ah, okay... I thought you meant ALL titles. Because I DID look up ME3 preorder and it was NOT $20 😀

I stopped reading when:

Im not paying $60 for 5 year old graphics. If it actually had real graphics i would. But as is they will only get a sale out of me when its 19.99 or less!

Sorry im over the console port to pc stagnation that we have had for a few years now. If you want to sell me a console port for $60 im not buying. Ill buy at 10-20 tho.

[citation][nom]wooodoggies[/nom]sissy devs, so they want a huge paycheck with no work? anything worth doing IS DIFFICULT[/citation]

I completely agree. I've worked in many factories, and was a tree trimmer for 10 years, struggling paycheck to paycheck... Ever run a punch press for 10 hours straight for weeks on end? How about climb a 100ft ice covered tree? Yeah, I didn't think so.. Luckily those days are over, but I'd still love to have a job programming games. Nice warm clean desk.. Lil carpel tunnel never killed anyone. Any gaming companies want to put a old school gamer / modder to school for programming and hire on let me know... I'll be waiting..

i love how everyone is always bitching about how piracy is killing the pc industry, ya a lot of ppl pirate games, theres no denying that, but ffs how many games are reporting 1.8 million pre-orders, or x game has just hit 3 million box sales

piracy has been happening for over 20 years now and probably wont be stopping any time soon, enough whining about it, accept that its going to happen and find a way to work with the ppl that pirate games, im sure if developers wanted to find an alternate option they could, why not try making it so if a pirate doesnt want to buy x game, you can dl it for free but have to deal with advertisments instead, you wouldnt stop all piracy, but im sure a lot would rather watch some ads then ever have to worry about virus', while giving you some revenue that would have otherwise been completely lost

I know lots of people who have hacked 360's, ps3's and wii's and i have to admit its quite interesting what people have done with them... consoles are only popular because of tweens.

Well I don't really like to start a discussion with YOU, I've been reading your comments on this article and Skyrim PC performance benchmark, you should learn to calm down, and then reply to other people's comments! I can't start a discussion with you simply because you are annoying! I don't feel obligated to teach anything to someone with your attitude !

I say it again, you have absolutely no clue where Direct3D and OpenGL fit into the engine's architecture! an engine is not built only and only using DirectX/OpenGL! You're just talking out of your arse, I'm sure you know it yourself very well!

I admit it, it's amusing to read your comments, but it's a pain in the arse to engage in a discussion with you!

Do your homework, at least read some articles on the internet!! then send me a private message, only then I will "enlighten" you!

until then, happy trolling !
