Skyrim troubleshooting pc

Hello,
The sound is ok on my PC for everything but Skyrim - I've checked everything I can think of but can only hear it properly through headphones. Any suggestions?

Also I have failed to link a game controller - I bought a PS3 controller with PC compatibility - to the game. I've set it to PC and it brought up a test window which suggested it is working but no dialogue box for downloading drivers appeared though the control panel is recognising the device. Can't think what to do. I'm not an experienced gamer so have no previous to draw on. I've got Windows 8.

what cable are you using to connect from your pc to your monitor? is the sound working on anything else?
can you list all your hardware specs, the better option for you is to get the xbox controller for pc its got better compatibility
