Bet you have all seen this post 1 too many times,

I'm running XPsp2 on a Pentium II, 730mhz with 2 x20Gig hard drives
(internal) and 1 80 Gig external for backup.

Computer is running slow, but not too slow. I's more of a lag. Open a
folder or click a menu bar and it stalls for a 1/2 second. It's annoying.
I've scanned with virusware, played with memory settings, cache, and the
problem won't go away. There's bout 4 gigs each avail on the 2 internal
drives, and 20 on the externals.

Can anyone suggest a fix? Any good utilities for diagnosing the problem?

Thanks,

Greg

Besides virusses, there are a number of other "malwares"
Download "Hitmanpro" and let it run on your system.
Or use Adaware and Spybot Search&Destroy
Also Clear de Registry ( use i.e RegSeeker)
Scan and defrag the hard drive.

Open "Task Manager" and have a look at the processes that eat up computer
time!
Look also on any rogue applications that need RAM and/or CPU cycles.

Success

Great post Shenan, really good information and put together in an easy to
read format. Worth keeping in archive. I hope you don't mind me quoting you
now and again. I see lots of people putting scribes together which are
really good but your post really encompasses some timely issues for
neophytes and experienced users.

Thank you for the comments. I really appreciate them.

As for quoting me, please do. Many things I have are reworded or further
researched points made/found in these and other like newsgroups and places.

The information is provided "as is", it is suggested you research for
yourself before you take any advice - you are the one ultimately
responsible for your actions/problems/solutions. Know what you are
getting into before you jump in with both feet.

I've been away for a couple days and was pleasantly surprised to see these
useful and informative replies. I have printed them out and hope to
implement them. I will update you on my progress. Btw, I have 386mb of
RAM, and was just told I should have at least a gig! (I'm a graphic
designer, 2D and web) I remember when 40mb cost $800.00...............

Thanks again all, and I hope to report soon.
