I was wondering if somebody could help with my dilemma. The problem is, after I've updated Windows XP Pro with SP1 and all the other hot fixes from Microsoft, my system just takes longer to boot up now.

I've tried installing Bootvis and tweaking the services and background programs and it's still taking approx. 50 seconds to 1 minute before it boots. It used to just take no more that 30 seconds before the update. What did I do wrong?

Also, I've loaded AVG Anti-Virus and Zonealarm Firewall. These 2 take SO LONG to load after I get on my desktop. It'll take at least another 30 seconds before I see them pop up on the taskbar, and before that, I cant seem to access anything before they load. Please help.

Here's my system specs:
Athlon XP 2200+
MSI K7N2-L Mobo
1 GB DDR333 RAM (CL2)
GeForce 4 TI 4800SE
WD 80GB 7200rpm

Zone Alarm will increase the bootime but not as bad as an autoscanning Anti-Virus program will, check the Anti-Virus configuration program and see if its set to run on startup, I keep mine disabled from running on startup, but allow the Email scanner to stay active, it only activates when you check your Email, then remember to ocasionally run manual virus scans.

If you've installed Windows XP Hotfix (SP2) Q811493, you might consider removing it.

<i>"Windows Updated users and prudent sys admins might have installed the latest Windows patch without a thought. That might not have been such a good idea. The patch is meant to fix a hole in Windows Messaging but can end up causing a severe performance degradation.

To remove the patch: Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Find Windows XP Hotfix (SP2) Q811493 > Click Remove > ignore Warning > Reboot by clicking Finish

The patch will be listed again on Windows Update when you next check for updates."</i>

This warning about performance degradation and slow boots after installing the hotfix has been circulating the 'Net since around the middle of April.
