Guys I need your help please...

I have a Western Digital 7200rpm 30gig HD and cannot get UDMA enabled in XP. The best I can get is "Multi-Word DMA Mode 2" which equates to 16mps transfer time.

My mb is capable of ata133 and I have checked all the cables, bios etc. I downloaded WD`s LifeGuard Tools and checked the settings in DOS. It showed that ata100 is enabled so it is not hardware or bios settings. It has to be in XP.

Can anyone help please...?

Your new hardware is out-of-date

Mobo specifications, please?

Is this the only device on the cable?

Have you installed the latest chipset drivers for the mainboard?

You should aware that if WinXP detects six or more CRC (<A HREF="http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000430.htm" target="_new">cyclic redundancy check</A>) errors the Ultra DMA transfer mode will be downgraded one step. Whenever possible, the operating system will step down one UDMA mode at a time (from UDMA mode 4 to UDMA mode 3, and so forth) as the errors continue. In addition, if WinXP encounters more than six DMA transfer timeouts, DMA will be turned off, and PIO mode will be used on the device.

All CRC and timeout errors are logged in the system event log. (Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Event Viewer\System). These types of errors could be caused by improper mounting or improper cabling (for example, 40-pin instead of 80-pin cable). Or such errors could indicate imminent hardware failure, for example, in a hard drive or chipset.
