slow hp 7310 after networking??

We just purchased a HP7310 all in one printer. It was working great.
Printing off reports and copying really quickly.

Then we networked it to a Linksys hub/switch box which also has two
computers network to it. NOW it prints very slow. It is a 10/100mps hub
and the computers are new and running xp windows. and it is not every
time, some times it prints ok and others times it is slow as a snail.

we share two other printers via sharing on the computers. each of the
printers connected to the separate computers and sharing back and forth.
they print just fine. They are a datamax label printer and a ithaca cc
receipt printer

Naturally the problem lies in the hub some where. Or is there a setting
on the printer I am not seeing to make it prints faster all the time.

Just how fast should it print over the network? Also, even just copying a
sheet on the printer takes much longer than before. This is really a
mystery to me.

Any help or comment woul be appreciated

What do the lights on the Linksys indicate? Is it connecting at 10 MBs or
at 100 MBs?

What speed and duplex settings are configured on the printer?

Don't you mean Mb?-) B's are bytes, b's are bits

And in particular do they match with the Linksys.

If it is indeed a "hub" then it should be half-duplex. If it is
really a "switch" (switches and hubs are different things) then it
could be full duplex.

How Autoneg is supposed to work:

When both sides of the link are set to autoneg, they will "negotiate"
the duplex setting and select full duplex if both sides can do
full-duplex.

If one side is hardcoded and not using autoneg, the autoneg process
will "fail" and the side trying to autoneg is required by spec to use
half-duplex mode.

If one side is using half-duplex, and the other is using full-duplex,
sorrow and woe is the usual result.

So, the following table shows what will happen given various settings
on each side:

Auto Half Full

Auto Happiness Lucky Sorrow

Half Lucky Happiness Sorrow

Full Sorrow Sorrow Happiness

Happiness means that there is a good shot of everything going well.
Lucky means that things will likely go well, but not because you did
anything correctly Sorrow means that there _will_ be a duplex
mis-match.

When there is a duplex mismatch, on the side running half-duplex you
will see various errors and probably a number of late collisions. On
the side running full-duplex you will see things like FCS errors.
Note that those errors are not necessarily conclusive, they are simply
indicators.
