Some annoying things in Morrowind...

Heh, now I know it has been a while since I played, but my memory has been
jogged in the last few days. There's some tad bit annoying things--maybe
glitches, I don't know--in Morrowind.

Hm, well there is the occasional crash-to-desktop. I guess not everyone
experiences this. I have completely upgraded since my last play, new
computer, new sound card, new video card... the video card and sound card
alone cost me nearly 800$, and I had been saving that money up for years.
Also have a gig of memory now instead of the 256 MB I once had. The game
runs smoother than I've ever seen, but I'll be running around in the
wilderness and things will seem to be fine, then all of a sudden, without
explanation, I'm back in Windows. I guess it is Morrowind and not my
computer, because that's what everyone told me when I had a different
computer altogether. Probably a memory leak, but what do I know...

And here's the biggest mystery of Morrowind I will never understand. It
truly boggles my freakin' mind, man. NPCs that don't move at all... for
instance, the silt strider caravaners... well, I'm on day 90 now, and the
guy in Balmora is no longer on the ramp! He is down on the ground, outside
the gate. So if I want to use that silt strider, I have to walk through the
gate and around the wall... and some of the Mage's Guild NPCs, they've moved
as well. That one altmer that started at the steps on the second floor in
Caldera, he is now half-way down said steps... this is probably why that
orcish woman you need in the main quest sometimes mysteriously vanishes. I'd
just like to know what causes this. Are the two moons of the planet you're
on pulling people gradually in one direction? Will everyone eventually end
up in the Sea of Ghosts!?

And occasionally, NPCs who attack ME suddenly say something like, "I'm being
attacked... HELP!". Hello? You attacked ME ya damn fool!

Yeah, happens to me too quite often. Probably a rip in the space-time
continuum (whatever that is 🙂 )

Sometimes people fall of the ramp, this can happen in the real world too.

Yes, the 'transporter' woman has gone on a very long break. Hey everyone
needs a vacation now and then ;-)

Not everyone is honest in morrowind I guess. (and you know what... they get
away with it since you are just an n'wah)

Try playing with music turned off.

Try "ra" (without the quotes - short for 'reset actors') at the console.

What we often forget, or don't notice, is, that every
time you move, the viewpoint and perspective of the
surroundings changes. And everyone of these changes
represents an upload or refresh of the screen. The
most
immediate of these uploades screens are stored in the
memory, and some more in the cache set aside on the
harddisk. They use up the memory and cache real fast.
If the memory and cache are not cleared from time to
time, you reach the limit and the next upload causes
a
return to the desktop.

When I first started playing MW, I could cross the
bridge
in Seyda Neen on my way towards east and Morrowind
and I had a crash at the same spot two uploads from
the
bridge. Saving the game after the first one, solved
the
situation

quicksave often will reduce the problem. saving to a
savegame is better

Ummm.... Isn't MW graphics rendered on the fly????

I think that's what he's saying. on the fly in this case seems to mean
as you move from one cell to the next, this makes a lot more sense
especially considering that cells themself are large enough not to mean
lots and lots of pauses for loading but not too big as to cause
extremely long load times (on a decent machine; decent meaning that
it's not minimum or maximum reccomended systems for morrowind). Having
it rendered completely on the fly would be unpleasant and fairly
pointless at least for a game that runs at optimal graphic levels on a
128mb (and possibly 64mb not sure on that) ati video card. on the fly
rendering would require 256mb or more (I could definately be completely
wrong here). Anyhow, just my 2 cents.

and you are correct. My cue for stopping and saving
was
the message that it was reloading. I could stop
immediately this was done, or I could do it just
before.
I am walking uphill at the spot, and the crash would
appear when I had taken two or three steps after the
upload

Just recently upgraded my whole system, now have the texture mod installed,
this really does need 256Mb on video, but is worth it, I still have some
crashes to desktop (rest of system is 3,4GHz with 1Gb RAM), I started
cutting plugins to try and stabilise, best option is saving lots, seems to
reduce the instances of crashing!

Seriously annoyed - NPCs disappear, forever! I've lost Hloggar the Bloddy in the Mournhold sewers, and I've lost the Ald-ruhn guildguide. These folks are just not THERE. I haven't killed them...

Does anyone have a solution to this - the guy in the Mournhold sewers I'm supposed to kill for a quest...

As someone said use the 'ra' command (reset actors) without the quotes

If this doesn't work then you'll have to open up the constructor. Find the index number for whatever NPC you need. Go to wherever you want to place the NPC and type 'PlaceAtPC {NPC index number goes here} 1, 1, 1' in the console (without the quotes).
