Some mainboards unstable with geforce2?

I have a Gigabyte GA6-BXD dual slot 1 motherboard that works fine with an Nvidia Vanta card but not with a geforce2 mx card. I think I remember seeing that some boards have problems with the geforce2, but I can't find any references to this. Could anybody explain this?

I actually managed to fry my GA board and am wondering whether to replace it with the same board or get another one. I only have a single PIII-700 Slot-1 at the moment, but was planning on getting another. However, if I can't find an SMP board that will work reliably with the geforce2, maybe I should just go for a simple Abit 440BX non-SMP... Opinions?

I have an Asus CUSL2 with the same CPU running verry stable at 933MHZ, 1.70 core voltage! So why not pick up one of these and really make it fly? (my system also has a scsi card, network card, geforce 2mx, Aureal Vortex2 SQ2500 soundcard, STB TV card....nothing seems to slow it down!)

That's a flipchip board though, right? My PIII-700 is a slot 1

Sorry, your right. I've heard good things on the Abit BE6-2 also, but have not tried it. It has the old-reliable BX chipset. Of coarse, none of my suggestions have been SMP.

Its not so much the card. Its 4X AGP the GeForce 2 has problems with. Just disable 4X and go to 2X and you will be fine. 4X has very little performance gain over 2X, overall maybe 2% increase max so its not a major issue. And with some tweaking you can get the 4X to work.

Tim, I think that AGP 4x bug was related to the irongate registry hack or something to do with the Athlon. This dude is running Intel stuff. I may be wrong though.

You are wrong. The 4X AGP issue has to do with Intel CPUs and mainly the Via Apollo 133 chipset I believe. I dunno about AMDs though. I tend to stay away from them if at all possible. But I am for sure its an issue with the Via Apollo 133 chipset. Both my computers are on Via Apollo 133 and I cant do 4X AGP on either of them unless I do some major tweaking. I am not for sure what his motherboard chipset is. Its late and I am way past due to go to bed.
