Sony and Samsung like other manufacturers make a range of products from low end to high end. You cannot base a monitor's performance simply on brand name and CRT type.

My lowend Sony 15" Trinitron monitor is better than the mid-range Viewsonic 15" I used to have. It is much clearer and sharper. I also notice better color quality. My friend has a 19" Sony Trinitron and it kicks the pants off of any other 19" monitor I have ever seen.

They may be expensive, but (as the saying goes) you get what you pay for.
