[citation][nom]saravis4[/nom]Wow all these comments and nobody notices the supposed date of the support kill: April 1, aka April Fools. I wouldn't be so quick to buy it.[/citation]

why would it? they already killed the support when they came out with the PS3 slim which has the same features as the original PS3.

As always, Sony can make some absolutely sick hardware, but their software is lacking at best.
The PS3 is a nice little console. 2xHDMI, 3xEtherner, 6xUSB, 250GFlop GPU (something like that), cell processor (which has its own benefits over a x86, at the cost of usability) etc. It was impressive a couple years ago atleat.
The PSP with a 333MHz CPU and high resolution screen was also impressive, back when it was originally released... Now we have phones with AMOLED screens, 1024x768 resolution, 1GHz CPU's (that can overclock like a beast, 512GB of RAM etc.

Sony, pick your asses up and get to work!

[citation][nom]TommySch[/nom]April 1...Its getting old.[/citation]
Nope. Using Linux on PS3 geohot made some progress towards hacking it. Obviously they got nervous at Sony...

[citation][nom]qwed88[/nom]What their doing is illegal, flat out. I purchase my console with that feature in mind. It was an advertised feature. I hope a lawsuit's coming and I hope their console gets cracked wide open.Sony has stepped over the line with this one.[/citation]

They have. They promoted their product with capabilities like OtherOs and they have NO right to remove them from your purchase product. You can make money out of that. If they did it to fight piracy like its been talked about its still their problem and they needed to find another way to prevent it instead of removing OtherOs all together from the consumer's devices.

[citation][nom]kencolestud69[/nom]all microsoft has to do to win the console war is enable linux on their game systems.[/citation]
never going to happen

If its done because of the hacks id say its better, I don't want the ps3 go the way of the psp.

[citation][nom]climber[/nom]Microsoft with their console isn't any better. At least I had a 500GB HD in my PS3.[/citation]

What does that have to do with Sony removing Linux support? There was not one mention of MS or a 360 in this article and your "I have a 500GB HDD and 360 does not" somehow makes this better?

Booooo

Sony won't lose any lawsuits on this, they have the right to use and offer what ever software they like and they state that right in their user agreement. Why anyone would want Linux is beyond me anyway, specially on a gameing machine.

Looks like I'll be relying on linux doing something sneaky like a dual boot by other means. I mean linux runs on plenty of other products without the maker's help or consent.

exactly. i haven't read the EULA they show whenever you go download an update but i am sure they can just throw that at the judge and the case will be dismissed.

All you kids are crying too much. I see the problem with security. But when you take things off (your extra ports), it makes thr system cheaper and when the first ps3 came out, I'm sure a cheaper system would intice you more to buy. Taking off backwards allows for Ps/2 games to be downloaded digitally allowing for money to flow in. I feel a lot of unecessary trash talking towards Sony makes your forget about they do give you.

If this is real, my thing is what about the 2000 ps3 the USAF bought to make a supercomputer. I'm sure they have a work around though.

they don't have to do anything because the PS3 doesn't auto update to the latest firmware.

I sure hope this is a April fools joke I have Linux installed on mine with all the classics snes nes neogeo games now going to have connect a computer to my TV to play them Son of B****

This had better be a joke took me week to get all emulators running good
I am not updating my ps3 till I no if this is really true it had better be a joke or Sony's going to be in some real hot water over this.

In fact I hope the ps3 gets hack wide open like the psp did that would teach them a lesson yep and first feature added would probably be a copy to hd menu on the game and movie disc.

I also bet Linux will also get full access to the ps3 gpu and ram witch would make Linux so much faster.

One note don't mess with the Linux community they will find a way to get it working again and in the process end up opening it to be fully hacked this is a stupid move Sony oh and they will probably get the slim ps3 working too.

And yellow dog Linux may also have legal recourse for removing Linux support unless they are owned by Sony.

This had Better be a joke this is not fair to the Linux community period.

the linux community is practically non existent when it comes to the ps3. stop crying and get a cheap netbook or WII to play your pirated NES games

This does not surprised me at all. Sony always makes products that have proprietary hardware and software. The word "Open" or "Other" are not in Sony's dictionary.

I no that linux, whatever distro you use isn't all that great on the PS3. But taking features that was originally on the ps3 is just crazy. We payed alot more for the fat ps3 then the slim. This is a huge kick to the ball's. I guess if it does happen it's a good reason to crack open my ps3 and get to work.

[citation][nom].We payed alot more for the fat ps3 then the slim[/citation]

so what? you can go out now and buy a $1500 pc and then in the next couple months you find you can get it for 700. the only one who got a kick in the balls from this is you cause you don't h

why bother removing it?! it isn't going to harm anything?! if a user tempers with the hardware and it breaks, it's the users fault.

for those who have the older ps3, you have lost some value to your ps3. the only real value left on the older ps3 is the backward ps2 compatibility. but knowing that sony is removing things, they'll might as well remove that so you can buy ps2 games on the playstation network instead.
