i wonder who will lose important data held on the linux partition because they dont follow the online tech news.

"hey a new update, ill just get that, skip skip skip, installing....

now il'l just go over to linux to print out my memoirs and... WTF?!"

Wow they are denying open source.....pretty sad. I could see it if people were installing pirated copies of Windows or something (not sure if its even possible), but Linux//Gentoo/Ubuntu gone?

WTF, that's a d-bag move on Sony's part.

I was starting to admire PS3's beauty too....

Oh well...

[citation][nom]waboolio[/nom]I'm blaming geohot for this[/citation]

If Sony had planned on dropping support for Linux before his work it would be a different story but as it stands from my perspective, weird timing.... Maybe there is more to his hack then Sony wants to admit?

I think the Linux community gets a little too hard-core with their platforms. There's the "OH yea!! I JUST InStalled LInux on mah CELL PHONE!! FTW!!!! can't make any calls, but it runs linux" or the "FUUUU Nintendo bans support of Linux on the DSi! FUUU RAGE!!!" or the "ZOMG I just installed LINUX ON MY MICROWAVE!!! it doesn't cook anymore but it runs LINUX!!!!"

Kingssman: yes it is awesome to get a custom build linux kernel compiled for some freaky hardware and even more awesome if you get it to run well.
This has nothing to do with being hardcore linux user or supporter but with accomplishment ... you know the feeling you might have after a game of soccer football tennis chess or any thing you might excel in.

Back to your question and further ignoring your childish attempt at being cool, The cell CPU in the PS3 can crunch way better then any x86 based cpu put there (sure GPGPU can crunch even better) now since sony never gave full access you cant actually use it for crunching as it is but that would be the ultimate goal for the linux community.

Till then the PS3 becomes a desktop computer connected to your (or mine in this case) 42" LCD browsing the web and doing some other computer oriented tasks like IM all from my lazy boy and without the need to buy a HTPC or any thing like it (and not having to pay the extra power usage for even more devices). In short the PS3 firmware already lets you watch hd flix you downloaded from the internet and play movies and browse the web (although the browser sucks) any other desktop computing task can be done in linux on your PS3 (for some stuff it might take some time before a port is released for the PPC but hey its a hobby).

Personally i hope this was a april foolsday joke (marketing research) and the to be releases firmware adds the functions to the slims firmware as there is no valid reason why both the phat and slim should not be capable of running linux.

[citation][nom]otacon72[/nom]All Sony is going to say is read your Terms of Service.. I've worked customer service for an internet service provider and all we had to say was "Please read your ToS, have a nice day". Sorry but no lawsuit would hold water.[/citation]

I have to disagree - a lawsuit would hold
The PS3 and its features is substantially different from an internet service where you agree to the terms of service when you sign up for the service.
In the case of the PS3, its a contract for the purchase of goods - you hand over X amount of money and they give you the product that is as described - ie has Linux support
They cant then refer to the fact that you agreed to the terms of use AFTER the sale and contract has been made as a way around their contractual obligations.
You see the difference? Its all about WHEN the terms are added to the contract: for an ISP its before the contract is made and therefore they can rely on the terms of service, but for the PS3 the terms are added after the sale of the console and therefore does not fall within the contract.

It´s not about April 1st, see here:

Yeah I disagree too, a lawsuit would most definitely hold up. I bought a product with these advertised features. Their basically stealing from me, and blackmailing me into shutting up, by saying that if I choose not to update I'll also not be able to use this, this, and this feature anymore. it's bull. I'm thinking maybe someone needs to set up some sort of petition, and filing a complaint with the FTC (https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/) would be the appropriate action at this point?

This is just outrageous, one of the many reasons I don't buy products made by Sony. Ever since that rootkit on music CD's that they have clearly shown what they are as a company.

The PS3 has over time also lost the ability to play Super Audio CD's and the PS2 emulator software. Now this Linux removal.

I don't know if this other OS removal has anything to do with it, but they are clearly struggling for RAM. John Carmack complained a few months ago that it was very difficult to make a game look as good as on the Xbox 360 because the PS3 had a RAM deficit, Sony's OS was too big compared to Microsoft's (which has a shared 512MB, plus a high speed 10Mb cache for the ATI GPU, effectively making it 522MB of memory available). Just the other day they announced they had managed to chop off 90Mb from the OS, giving that free RAM to game developers. Just are probably chopping off everything they can. Giving the PS3 only 512 (256+256) was a fatal mistake in the first place anyway. The Xbox360 was launched before and it is more understandable, but by the time the PS3 came out, 1GB was the ideal, especially if you consider it is supposed to last many more years than a regular PC, which can be upgraded.

And since you cannot have PS3's with less RAM available playing the same game, which would mean first and second grade quality PS3's and they would have to introduce quality settings just like on the PC, which would add to the complexity, they just axe features on all of the models.

Sony slowly turning more into Microsoft, APPLE, and Nintendo as days pass by! The guys who allowed modded units flourish in the early 2000's and the guys who brought us the betamax, recordable tape and mini disc, all mediums for..... you know what!!!!

A relative of mine had his disc playing abilities removed when, what I assume is, the disc reader died. Not even a system error indicating what is wrong. Calling the PS3 a computer, and now removing the feature... you already can't do this on the slim, Wednesday Thursday Friday SONY? I want a $100 for my troubles.

I purshase a produt (PS3) with a list of features and with free update service.
If Sony is REMOVING from me something I have payed for I will consider a ROBBERY and I want the MONEY BACK from that feature I OWNED. OF COURSE

LMAO are you for real?!!

Yours is the first comment with even a vague clue about the true legal implications of this action. All that matters is what was agreed to at the POS -- this is true in the U.S. and doubly so in most of Europe. I expect Sony's legal department has already figured out how much they'll lose as a result of this action, i.e. what they'll eventually need to settle for in the class action suits that follow and determined that they can afford it (how many PS3 60gb originals are still out there?). It's worth it to them to prevent the eventual exploit that was coming--where the original PS3s would be completely open to pirate software, etc.

TOS and EULA contracts have no bearing here. I doubt they'll even be used as a defense in court by Sony as they have no interest in having them challenged and declared null and void.

For a fact no EULA has any value in europian courts ... EULA never go above the local or europian law if they sold the console claiming it could run linu it won't mather if they actively supported it or not they sold a functioning device and removed a function this is at least misleading and thus there is ground for legal actions no mather what the EULA states.
however the question is would any one invest in getting this case to court ... maybe microsoft can lend us some lawers and money I am sure they are interested in getting some smear on sony's track record.

I for one still believe this is a afoolsday joke and they will keep linux support on the phat and will even enable it on the slim
