find me where on the PS3 box does it say that you can run Linux on it. if not then you should sue the store you bought it from if they were the ones that told you it has this ability. the case would have too many holes and gray areas and if you are lucky could be dismissed or if not then the judge would see that there is a EULA presented before downloading the update and would rule in Sony's favor. but who these days is going to risk going through a long court case where even if you win still would not be able to fit the bill for the lawyer fees.

They (sony) marketed the PS3's ability to run linux on their websites and they (sony) loved to mention it at any gaming or home theater related event.
On the website it clearly stated that the PS3 can run linux though sony is in no way responsible for or affiliated with the distributions. (this is supporting the function not the actual OS).

Again EULA have little to no value in most of the world, you could even say the USA is one of the few nations that takes EULA's in consideration in court.

There is nothing on the box about running linux on your ps3 (a load in the manual though) however there is nothing on the box about streaming audio/video over your home network either ... nothing about running PS1 games and nothing about DVD playback (though again those are mentioned on the websites and by sony during events).

It really does not matter if you actually want to use the function but if you paid money for it it should remain in place. Imagen your brand new graphics card being able to support shader model 4 and after a good 2 years it can only run shader model 3.0 or your car has an ashtray and magically after 2 years of use the ashtray is gone.
You cant sell a product and take part of it back (in this case bits and bytes).

well unlike all the anal people of the world on here i actually spent money on a PS3 to play (gasp!!!!!) games.

just for the record i am not trying to be a fanboy but just laughing at people complaining about losing the ability to use a crappy and limited version of linux on a game console when they can just switch to using it on a computer. your loosing nothing!!!!!

So if you don't care about something no one should care? If you don't see any use for it that's fine by me but don't lecture any one else on how to use their system.

You're clearly a legal genius. This "show me the box" defense is brilliant. It will be studied in years to come.
