What is the best sound card out there to go with a 1.2 gig AMD Thunderbird?? I've seen some on price watch cheap but I'm not sure what kind is the best.
thanx

I stick with anything creative labs. I've tried Diamond's cards and they seems to always interfere with at least one of my games whereas creative NEVER does. Go with the X-Gamer Live

The MX300 does not work with your VIA chipset. It is a VIA problem. I don't know much on the MX400. A lot of people are reporting good luck with the new Philips cards.

"The MX300 does not work with your VIA chipset"

I have MX300 for a little more than 2 years and it was ran on anything:

mobos: Asus - P2B, K7M; Abit BE6, BE6-2, KT7 (now)
with processors: P2-350, P3-500, P3-550, Athlon-500, 550, 600, TBird-900 (now)
and on Windows: 95, 98, 98SE, ME (now), WinNT4, W2k (now) without any problems. Have no idea what kind of problems you guys are having with it?

its not too late yet...

A lot of people like the Creative cards as well. But the part I said about the MX300 is true-the Vortex2 sound chip and drivers do not work well with the VIA chipset. This leaves you with Creative and the minor players. A lot of people are saying that their Philips cards work well on the Athlon systems, and some are even praising Crystal sound. I think I would prefer some of the newer Yamaha chips. But the Creative is almost a sure bet if you don't want to look around.

People keep posting problems using A3D or Soundblaster Compatability mode. If you use neither, then maybe you won't have a problem. If you do use both and still don't have a problem, start helping all those other guys out that do!

I ordered the acoustic edge from philips, I'll be sure to post something about it when I get it up and running. My aureal card just plain blows goats...crashes my AMD box all the time. I had to install windows 2k without the card plugged in just to get the OS to finish setup, and aureal cards still don't play games in win2k. I'm just gonna hold out like this for a couple of weeks until the new card comes in. At least I can still listen to MP3's.

How in the h*** did you get your mx300 working with the via/win2k setup? Which drivers are you using? I had problems in both APM and ACPI mode with the win2k WDM drivers. I can't remember if I tried the beta drives or not. I might have, but probably in ACPI mode. I would love to disable the onboard sound and put my MX300 back in my rig. I have a Soyo K7VTA-B with a tbird 1000.
