Hi, I am having a sound issue with my Dell Optiplex 990 (Service Tag CWQJLS1).
The sound will cut out and stutter when I stream audio. Each cutout lasts about 1-2 seconds. I have tried streaming from multiple sources, including Spotify, Pandora, iHeart Radio, Radio.com, Tunein.com. The problem occurs with all of these sources.
I have also tried all of the fixes listed below. None solved the problem.
• Changed the speakers. Including the 3.5mm audio cable.
• Changed the router.
• Changed the Ethernet cable that connects the router to my computer. It is a hard wired connection. A desktop computer without WiFi.
I streamed all of these services over my iPhone. Using both WIFI and without WIFI. The problem did not occur. Sound was fine.
I also own a laptop, and streamed all of these services over my laptop with a hard wired Ethernet connection to my router. The problem did not occur. Sound was fine. I tried swapping speakers, cables, etc. Still the sound was fine. No issues.
I wanted to test whether it could possibly be a slow Internet connection. Speedtest shows both my desktop and laptop operating at 55Mbps for both download and upload. My laptop does have WIFI, so I disconnected the Ethernet cable and my WIFI Internet speed dropped to 20Mbps. I re-ran all tests and the sound came through fine on the laptop. No cut outs or stutters. This leads me to believe a slow Internet connection is not the source of the problem.
I tried to record the sound using a program called Audacity, which records all sounds on a computer. But Audacity did not record the cut outs and stutters. It was smooth sound through the recording. Even though I wrote down the exact second the cut outs occurred. Not sure why this happened, and what the implications are for the source of the cut outs.
To add one more layer to this issue, this is my second new computer in the past month. I had no cut out or stutter issues with my old computer. Last month I purchased a refurbished Dell, and returned it to the seller because the sound was cutting out and stuttering as well as some other issues. The seller gave me a different computer. The one I own now. And the sound issue that was present with the first computer is also present in with current computer. The same exact symptoms in both computers.
I appreciate any input as to the source of the sound cut out and stuttering.
Processor is an Intel i7-2600 @ 3.4Ghz. 12 GB Ram. Windows 7 with all current updates installed.
