Spectrum Gateway vs. Modem and router

Signing up for spectrum high speed internet ultra package... 400 mbps... Should I pay the $5 for a gateway device or go with the free modem and get my own router? And which router should I get under $100?

Plain Modem Always. ISP provided routers are usually not very good, then you are locked in, can't upgrade with your own, plus the ISP equipment is usually located in a corner of the house, you want an WIFI router to be situated in the middle of the house for inclusive coverage, or at least be move-able in cases of multi-router deployment for large square footage.

Doesn't the router have to be hard-wired to the modem? The house isn't very big (3 bd 1 bath), but it is older with thicker plaster walls.

Hardwire is correct. If u have single story less than 2,000 square foot may get away with it in a corner.
