speeding up downloading and uploading

Hello...I am new and I have a question.
Is there any place in WindowsXP, that you can tweak to make your
downloads and uploads go faster ?

I love this forum and have had a great time looking around.
I am off to look some more.

When you d/l a file you are given a share of its bandwidth along with any
other users, and this may depend on how many users are connected. To cheat
and grab more bandwidth you can try using software called a download manager
which can allow multiple connections to that site- but its success depends
on the site itself, how it is set up and what it allows. Try something like
the free Fresh Download. You'll need to register after you've tried it but
it's free. There is other software available but some have spyware with
them, Fresh programs don't.

For the most part, XP is configured pretty well on its own. All those
tweaks you read about to speed up the TCP/IP stack are not really needed
w/ XP. Under W98 they often helped, but XP is smarter and gets most
things right. But if you must, CableNut is recommended. Personally, I
didn't find that it made much difference at all. Thankfully it has a
"remove all tweaks" button that takes you back to the XP defaults.

You might find that a "download accelerator" or "download manager" is a
useful utility to have tho. With it you can "queue up" a list of items to
download, and then let it handle getting all of them while you walk away.
If the connection should fail it will retry and ensure that you don't have
to start all over again from the beginning. That's real important if you
dial-in and want to download something big that might take hours, or if
you want to handle it overnight while you sleep. Recovering from a modem
hang-up is no longer painful, it'll resume right where it left off; a
lifesaver IMHO. FWIW, I like GetRight. Fresh Downloader is free; there
are others, Google for "download manager". CAUTION: some of these include
ad-ware, read the fine print. The two mentioned do not.

The time of day I d/l can 2x-3x my speed on RR.
I try to d/l larege files (>200MB) @ 0300-0600 Eastern
when all US is asleep except me & most cats I posted
speeds on DSL site that were called insane!
2nd best time was 1400-1700

Also depends on server:

For compare, RR has test files for http & ftp @
http://test.tampabay.rr.com/ that I usually run at
320+ (KB/sec) in d/l progress box.
