Spyware in Hardware

I'm concerned about new forms of spyware being
implemented in mass hardware products like routers,
modems, firewalls for DSL/Cable/LAN.
Nowadays such hardware for home use is very cheap
and the market is booming.

Any hardware routers or modems known for having
spyware/adware implemented which collects and sends
information about the surfing behaviour of users?

Such devices are hard to control in what they
internally do (for example a DSL modem/router/firewall).
It is IMO the next best place to spy out people, since
nobody would expect that from such hardware...

The closest was one model (I forget the brand) of firewall/router that
would randomly redirect you to a built-in page that pushed a paid updating
or some other service.

Belkin did that. The ensuing uproar quickly made them remove the
redirect...
