hi, so im running a z790 DDR4 gigabyte mother board and looking at buying an M.2 ssd, my question is how can i know if my mother board supports the full speed of the ssd ? as my friend bought the crucial p5 plus which was advertised to provide up to 6600 mb/s but he was only getting 3000 something when testing it.

My 2nd question is which SSD is best for gaming at under $150 ?

"Up to" is just that.

Under certain conditions in some circumstances......used in marketing material to get you salivating. As opposed to real world probable experience.

The tactic is apparently quite successful as it has been used year after year. Same thing with appeals to benchmarks.

Best gaming SSD under 150??

In what capacity?

From what vendor in what location?

CPU:
  1. 1 x M.2 connector (Socket 3, M key, type 22110/2280 PCIe 4.0 x4/x2 SSD support) (M2A_CPU so it supports any PCIe x4 gen4 SSDs at their full speeds.
Chipset:
  1. 2 x M.2 connectors (Socket 3, M key, type 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4/x2 SSD support) (M2Q_SB, M2P_SB) so it supports all NVMe PCIe gen3 at full speeds also geb4 but at gen3 speeds,
  2. price is mostly determined by make and model and capacity.

From my memory - the best SSD for gaming under $150 is probably the Samsung 990 Pro 2TB, and the Solidigm P44 Pro 2TB is extremely close. According to the reviews here on Tom's, anyway. They lead the pack in the 3DMark Storage benchmarks, with outstanding latency and 4K random reads. But it's so close that it's basically tied.

Would you notice a difference in gaming between the best SSD vs any other random SSD? Probably not. But since you asked, there's my answer. :)
