[citation][nom]quizzical[/nom]It's unclear where your frame rate numbers come from. The game engine has at least two different ways to give players frame rate information, and they often contradict each other.[/citation]

I didn't use either, I used FRAPS.

The results jived with what I saw with or without FRAPS running, it was clear that on certain cards the game was slowed to a slideshow at max settings.

I do mention that I searched for the worst case scenario, but that's the point. Nobody wants to tweak their visual settings constantly to adapt to changing game levels. By using the worst case scenario, we know the confortable settings we can leave the game at without having to tweak them when we travel to different maps.

I don't think so, Kettu. I think you might have missed the point of my response.

P4-2.8ghz +ECS PT800CE-A, 2gb DDR@ 400mhz, WD320GB IDE, HIS 4670 1GB AGP

STO minimal effects settings @ 1440x900 = 30-60FPS and 50fps avg, drops to maybe 15fps at worst-case (IE, Fleet missions, and on some space-stations)

I can still read the ship-name and registration # on the hull; Absolutely playable, if you don't need to see every pretty FX feature.

Thanks for the review I play this game a lot and like it. I just got my first ship am very casual on my gaming time so I like this game for that. Probably will take me other 2 months to get to 45 or whatever.

On the hardware side I just got a 5770 which runs it ok but I hope it can get better with newer drivers. Could just be me but am seeing better average fps with 10.2 drivers that just came out so ati cards will get better.

Bridge Commander is the bomb after you download some of the mods that bring the graphics up to modern levels. I like the Kobayashi MOD, you just have to learn how to apply the files to the original install. The graphics and sound are really much better than what is offered by ST Online. I haven't played it but I've watched over a dozen videos online. Bridge Commander is much more realistic and the best Star Trek Starship Battle game there is.

LOL Bridge Commander would be the farthest thing from "realistic". It is basically an FPS dogfighting game. Let me ask you something, could you imagine battleships/destroyers/aircraft carriers out at sea, dogfighting other ships? No? Me either. Same premise would pretty much apply to space. These ships you'd be flying in Star Trek aren't fighters, they're supposed to be equivalents to naval ships, not F16 Fighter Jets. Bridge Commander plays like a flight sim with dogfighting figther jets, foregoing "realisim" for frantic twitch play.

In other words as far from "realistic" as you can get.

BC is a great game, don't get me wrong, but in no way is it more "realistic" than what is offered in STO.

Just have to say, STO was the game I was waiting for, my new two year MMO, alongside LOTRO, (wow bores me, my own personal choice, it is still a good game) EVE is too long term economy focused and not for new starters I feel.

But STO, oh cryptic how you have let me down, I understand you have not had the full 5 year developement cycle, and without your intervention it would not have come to pass, but i think I would have preferred to wait at least another year and see the gameplay mechanics introduced correctly before this launch.

1) No bridge combat, flight, anything..... heck even sitting in your chair is wrong /sit This is the basis of Star Trek, the bridge operating, how can it be missing, its not right.......

2) Space is open and free to raom when you have a starship with warp drive capability, well not in STO, its a bunch if maps where you solo quest in a defined area or get joined with other players in instances in a defined area. this breaks the feeling of space up completely and ruins everything, i want to sit in my bridge, point the ship in a direction and hit warp speed,It would only take an image onscreen of stars shooting past, how hard is that, and then random worlds generated you get instructed by your bridge officers, come out of warp and head under impulse to planet now visible in distance, explore planet, first contact, heck nuke the planet, beam back onboard, point nose in new direction hit warp!!!!!!!!!!

3) Repetition, its all the same through the game, heck its so obvious by planets, asteroids bases, everything, same objects same textures, sometimes different colors, same missions, wash rinse repeat....

4) No death penalty... turn the game into a shoot at recless abandonmetn it does not matter, die respawn fire, die respawn fire wash rinse repeat, STO should have been harder than this with real consequences of your decisions, choices to be made that are hard, real losses and gains, and a system that grows with this, the chance was there to make a MMO completely new, groundbreaking and different, but we have raids, tanks, dps Buffs and all the tried and tested and now getting old MMO stuff already done..

The good things about STO is it does look good in space, the ships look good, and I am glad they have not gone with real physics of space flight(although i was disappointed with this at first until I realized that no Starship in Star trek followed the laws of physics correctly anyway)So yes, following laws of gravity in handeling of the ship is ok.

the weapons sound great PEW PEW PEW, love that, the ground combat is fun, as well as the pvp, I am not that interested in end game, its the path getting there that is more important..

Ships look good but there could have been a little more customization on them with sliders like when changing body details of your characters, allows far more possibilities of having a unique ship.

Overall 6/10 for STO will be back in six months after my month runs out to see any changes and decide then if it has nabbed first spot from LOTRO...

Good article though, but looking at the state of the game, i hold all the benchies results with a pinch of salt, game is still very buggy (No problem it is new and MMO is different to other types of games, as well as server loads ect, I give cryptic the benefit here, its not easy launching a MMO especially one that was always going to be popular)
Thins is, I think this will all change in time as the game matures and i dont think there is any this way or that going on qith Toms and Nvidia or ATI...

I just wanted to point out that the first time I saw this kind of optimization for gaming personally was well before this era. This was in the days of my old AMD K62 computer. It had a higher clock speed and was faster in all other games and software than the Pentium processor in game requirements for the original Rainbow Six, but this game was clearly optimized for Pentium and was completely unplayable on my AMD processor. I had to upgrade my video to well beyond the game requirements to play this game.

If you know anything about mmos/play mmos and have played STO you would know that its pretty much a terrible game and is already dying out lol. Just sayin.
