Ok, I've just picked up steamband and have been banging my head
against a wall here. I've been trying some engineers to start and I
can never survive past the first level of the dungeon. hitting
anything with anything except buckshot has been practically impossible
(and YES I am allocating skills). For one, even grazes are lethal
even from full wps. Any advice for a steam newbie?

With your engineers, use Spring Blade where appropriate, and buckshot
with a 20-gauge shotgun, and consider doing the stair yo-yo trick at the
very beginning to gather a bit of extra cash. Once you have enough
money, buy a Clockwork Chassis and build up your Gadgeteer and Clockwork
Chassis skills as quickly as possible to the point where you can use
Forward Cannons.

Also, read the FAQ's regarding woundpoints. If you're doing anything but
potion drinking and resting when you have a graze, it is likely you'll
bleed to death. When you're wounded your safe resting. You might also
try using rayguns. If you move around while wounded and on low
hitpoints, your wounds will break open, bleed, and you will likely die.
Rest and quaff healing. 🙂

Sell the Shotgun Ammunition Generator and buy Clockwork Carbine.
