[SOLVED] Stepping code

What exactly is a stepping code? I've found different information about this and I'm not quite sure what it's suppose to present...

I'm looking to upgrade my old PC with a newer version of CPU and the once I've found has different stepping codes. Does that affect the CPU somehow and which one is the best?

I believe I get it now. I read in a few places that it just represents the purity of the materials used in making the core. Now I see that's not completely true.

Unfortunately I still don't know which one of these revisions is the newest. I'm assuming it's the last one, but I can't find any information since the processor is long discontinued.

Stepping codes are regularly in alphabetical/numerical order. The last one would be the newest.
