When I was a kid we had an apartment we rented to an engineer from Bell Labs that moved to our area to work for AT&T. The company was paying his rent and he didn't know how long he was going to be here. As a kid interested in all things tech and a sci fi fan he told us "stories" about clip board computers. Well being around 1986 or so a computer, man even a display the size of a clip board was enough to fix your attention on his pocket protector as spun yarns of how we would be using these things to do our work on. I thought it was really cool and he worked all the time and he eventually was transferred to another project and was leaving. I didn't think anything of it until I saw an AT&T ad for "You Will" and well the fax on the beach is an image that had stayed fresh in my mind. Fresh to the day my company got Windows 2000 fujitsu tablets complete with cellular modem and ID card scanner and stylus for signature verification ,so we could upload and verify them from the central data base. Point being an example of a product actually in a functioning prototype phase in 1986. You can find the "You Will" AT&T commercials on you tube from the early 90's. Another interesting fact when he left he said he was going to be working on new project called "The Hobbit".

And Jules Verne predicted submarines and rockets, and so did Arthur C. Clark a lot of other things, for a period greater then 27 years...
Merit tho must be given to Herr Jobs here, that he did start the tablet hype with the first working as intended tablet.

This is a fluff article: tablets will sell well when they're affordable and function well. Duh. Star Trek has been demoing the idea and MS has been making convertables before that was even a word. If I remember correctly, tablets were even in 2001: a Space Odyssey, a film made in 1968. This article should be edited to specifically and explicitly note that it's about the ipad, a specific brand rather than a unique idea. It's unbelievable that a news site would claim someone thought of something first when they obviously didn't, or produce a product first when again they didn't.

Dont understand why Steve Jobs is looked upon as a technological Jesus , any CEO of a company that tells their customers that they are holding their faulty product wrong is a complete and utter douche....

[citation][nom]bigdragon[/nom]Clearly they're trying to make the case that tablets, smartphones, and other pad-like devices are stolen technology. There is no other conclusion to draw from this. Jobs invented everything!! We might as well close down the patent office because everything that could be invented now is just stolen from Jobs. We've really gotten to that level of absurdity now.[/citation]

It's true Jobs did invent everything. Fire , the wheel, patenting and licencing agreements etc. etc .. Fortunately, j ust because civilisation hadn't come up with a legal system to implement it yet, otherwise we had to pay through the nose to apple in licencing fees every time you would implement a circlular device used in/for moved, more presicely for transportation, being applied to animal drawn, or mechanically powered contructions using 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10 or more of said circular invention, or also investions like floors, roads, rails and as take off mechanism for airoplanes ( patent pending.. apple)

😀 they call that jobs predicting tablet, sounds just like a fanatic interpretting their holy book 😀 it's not even close 😛 but they make it as jobs already predict them =)) very funny

[citation][nom]toxteth[/nom]"He correctly predicted rise in popularity of personal computers more than 25 years ago."Also Doug Engelbarts demo in 1968:http://www.dougengelbart.org/first [...] -demo.html - predates this prediction by 25 years, why do you not write about him, Toms is so selective in its praise and seems to disregard those that predicted the whole shebang long, long before Jobs[/citation]

Some Tom writers are of the biased kind and know only how to write about one thing...

[citation][nom]nbelote[/nom]What about this thing from Star Trek TOS:http://farm5.static.flickr.com/412 [...] 58fbb1.jpgI'm fairly sure it was a computer, and quite wireless.[/citation]

holy crap someone should give that picture to samsung.. looks like someone invented a rectangle with a only one button and a screen long before apple.. sure it doesn't have rounded corners but its still a good example of prior art.

I'm a bit concerned about the opening sentence of this article.. it seems to suggest that tablets were popular before the end of 1999.. in actual fact tablets have been more of a gimmick device until just a few years ago. I remember all of the PC makers scrambling to make PC based tablets around the early 2000s and failing to get any traction.. even oqo and transmeta (two pioneering companies in this field) went belly up.. so I would suggest that the opening paragraph is both false and misleading.. Steve jobs cant have successfully predicted the rise of the tablet market before the turn of the millennium because it didn't rise until a couple of years ago. unless of course his prediction was that it would rise before the turn of the next millennium.. which of course is a no brainer.. I predict we will all be driving electric vehicles by then too.. you can bow down to my greatness because i can see into the future lmao

Holy shit, Steve Jobs is dead and he is stilling getting his dick sucked.

Talk about riding the Apple cock.

For god sake, any person who is in the IT field and knows about computers, that isn't on them for Facebook will make a ton of predictions and most of them will become realities.

I told my father and a friend probably over 6 years ago that cloud computing was the future, people looked at me like I was the retard.

I guess I should make a hipster company and dress like a squater, maybe I can become a billionaire.

Microsoft made a Windows XP tablet WAY before the iPad was even though up, hell even before the iPhone.

[citation][nom]danwat1234[/nom]Yup and TNG/VOY/DS9/ENT "Pads", but of course this is all after 1983.[/citation]
PADD actually, it stood for Personal Access Display Device.

[citation][nom]bllue[/nom]Stevie Jobs was more of a crook than a visionary[/citation]

Close, he was more of a bullshit artist, and people still eat his brown trout!

Delusional people will see what they want to see and have a hard time seeing or believing anything else. There's no direct mention of a tablet. What makes you think he wasn't referring to a laptop? Take a look at consipiracy theorists. People like Zak Islam are no different. You make a claim and you find the facts to back up your claim. Try drawing the conclusion after the fact, not before and you might sound more credible.

Yeah, the difference between Steve Jobs and sci-fi technology is that he talked about a vision in 1983 and actually made in happen 27 years later. Give the guy some credit for his achievements! Jobs has passed away and people are still speaking hatred against him because of technological preferences and opinions that differ from his ideology. I used to criticize Apple products when I was a teenager... then I grew up and realized the merits of competition and variety.

1) How is a recording rare?

2) 'slates' have been predicted science fiction authors since the 1950's. The headline should have been:

Steve Jobs Probably Read Popular Science Fiction

[citation][nom]otacon72[/nom]Steve Jobs was more of a visionary than an inventor and there's nothing wrong with that.[/citation]

I don`t want to talk bad about dead people, but:
He had no vision nor invented anything... he just proffits from other vision/inventions.
He was great in capitalist economics... where dog eat dog and they all chocke with apple ishit.
