[SOLVED] Storage Server offline again...

Hello, so my janky storage nas went offline. I noticed the web interface said the HDD went offline before the nas went offline entirely, which is likely due to the way its plugged into the optical bay and the SATA data cable likes to fall out.

I took the hdd out and plugged it into my PC just to ensure the data is still there. Nothing shows in file explorer, however, disk management shows the drive fine.

How can I assign the drive a letter and make sure no data is destroyed? The option to assign a letter is greyed out.

I believe the drive is formatted for Linux or something due to the OS on the nas.

Solution
Follow the instructions in my FAQ. It tells you which components to examine and provides you with a possible zero-cost DIY solution.

At least tell us the model number of the HDD, or preferably upload a photo of the component side of the PCB. The screws are most likely Torx 6 or similar.

If you have a multimeter, connect the adapter cable to the PSU, but not the HDD. Now measure the voltage at the SATA pins. This should tell you whether the adapter is correctly wired.

You should be able to post pictures of your own experience with that now, after the day you had.
Nothing more than what I showed here. Didn't catch the flames unfortunately.

I was planning to plug the HDD into my brother's EVGA 600b since Its non-modular and I didn't want to dig for my Molex cable.

Good thing I didn't otherwise he would have killed me for literally catching his PC on fire.

The continual question: "Can I use an adapter for...?"

Even with the best of intentions, the apparent proper adapter cable, the supposed correct voltage...
Any 'adapter' raises the fail potential off 0.
As evidenced by your smoke checked cable and HDD.

And the vast majority of "Can I?" is coming with far more sketchier parts than yours.
Hence the generic answer of "No".

All of the damage was relating to the 5v

The 5v red wire burned and the safety thingys on the 5v part of the hdd were burned.

Since that adapter worked with the molex psu before and failed suddenly when a different psu was used, i think something was off with the wiring of the adapter.

Although thats not the first time i have fried something plugged into the molex of this psu. The first one was an lcd i was going to use to have a semi transparent case windows.
