So I seem to be having an isolated issue with my new rtx 4080...randomly while playing games the display would turn off and back on as though there is a display port cable issue(loops continuously until restart of pc) ive also noticed at time when the display returns for a few seconds it is as though the res has dropped to 240p although nvp still shows 1440p...another issue is sometimes this perceived res drop will happen without the screen turning off and on and a restart or just pulling the display port cable out and reconnecting would fix the issue. So now for the tricky part this issue did not happen with my rtx 3080 and the same monitor...and im on a brand new build.

Initially i installed the 4080 on my 9900k build and i assumed its driver issues i did not use ddu as i was waiting on my new build. Once my 13900kf build arrived I did a completely clean install but the issue has persisted. The issue is also not triggered by load as cs go seems to be the number 1 culprit although it has happened most recently in RE4 Remake. The issue did not occur in full playthroughs of hogwarts legacy and witcher 3 enhanced. Stress testing using port royal has also not produced the issue. Using the snipping tool during the res drop and viewing those images after restarting the pc shows the images at their normal 1440p res. If I do RMA immediately im worried this issue will take a long time to troubleshoot as it seems to be uncommon.

Troubleshooting I've done so far:
  • Reinstalled drivers
  • Tried 2 different display port cables
  • tried the uefi firmware update
System specs:
Alienware 1440p 240hz
13900kf
Palit Rtx 4080 gamerock
360mm Fractal lumen aio
z690 aorus ultra
32gb ddr5 6000mhz
1000w 12vhpwr ud
1x 2tb nvme , 1x 1tb nvme , 2 x 1tb hdds

Update: When playing through re4 this morning the screen started to go in and out of standby once again but this time the fans went up tp 100% although afterburner showed temp as 67c.

I know you probably don't want to go there but have you consirded trying a fresh windows install?
Thought I should just provide an update I sent through the card for a 2nd rma and the issue was this time replicated by the seller. I was offered a replacement or credit. opted for credit and switched to another 4080 brand.
Check your gpu (Nvidia Control panel) refresh rate against your windows refresh rate to make sure they match up. Try using high power mode when gaming.
Hi thanks for feedback so an update on the issue...(I did confirm that the refresh rate of windows and Nvidia control panel was the same) prefer maximum performance was set as the global setting however on Thursday when I reset nvidia control panel back to default settings I assume power management went back to balanced when trying to play through RE4 remake the monitors completely turned off with gpu fans ramping up to 100%. The pc itself did not switch off..I was able to produce this result consistently after around 10-20mins of gameplay in RE4 the monitors would just switch off/standby with 100% fan usage and only a restart fixes the issue.

Im on the latest bios (f23) also did the nvidia uefi update on the 4080 just incase did not fix the issue.. You think rma of the card is best?
It is strange that it only happens with one game and all other games and tests do not result in this behavior. If you go into computer management and check the critical error/s report does it show anything that coincides with the bahavior?

It also says in Steam to give Steam and the game Admin privelages, and to add the game/s to Anti-Virus exception list if it applies. Have you tried setting your Windows power management to high performance for gaming? (Not Nvidia Control Panel)
Yeah it was initially set to high performance.. And prefer maximum performance in nvidia control panel.. Not 1 game. It initially happened in cs go thereafter i played witcher 3 and hogwarts legacy with no issues however resident evil 4 remake was the 2nd game it happened with.. Just I couldn't get the issue to occur in stress tests like port royal. But the issue still happens in re4 and cs go

If they are both Steam games you go into the library and verify the files with each game. You can also run a Directx check in run DXDIAG

Have you tried turning off X-box Game bar under gaming settings and trying gaming mode off and on? One other thing is the motherboard chipset driver up to date also?
yeah game bar and game mode off , chipset drivers are up to date. what worries me is this happened on 2 different builds. I used the power adapter initially and had the same issue(850w psu). on my new build I'm using the gigabyte 12vhrpwr(1000w psu) and it has the same issue. One other important factor is it does not always black screen crash immediately , sometimes it has what seems like a visual issue were everything being displayed appears blurry(as though 240p res) i can continue playing but eventually it will black screen crash.this happened both in re4 and cs go

What display are you using? Also use Gpu-Z to check that your gpu is running at 16x and not sharing pcie lanes with the cpu/m-2 etc.

I have been reading up on the 4080 and see a ton of people having your problem. It seems to be a 4080 system thing and not really the 4080 in itself. Nvidia has told people like yourself that it's not their 4080 (of course) but the 4080 with another system. The only other thing I saw was that people disabled the shader cache setting in Nvidia control panel for the troubled games and also tried not using MSI afterburner if it applies to you.

Just decided to send the gpu back for testing with the retailer just incase its the gpu itself... I haven't had a single black screen after swapping in the 1050ti

An update on this issue the card was returned to me stating no fault was found however it continues to do the same thing(screen losing signal) have connected the pc to a new power outlet and went back to the old nvidia adapter and it has made no dfference.

1 more important bit of info on the blurred res, pixelation that occurs at times this normally happens while gaming but even upon minimizing or closing the game the entire desktop and sub menus remain blurred until a complete pc restart. The pixalation/blur is so bad that writing cannot be distinguished . i did manage to get into ncp while this happened and could see it was still set at 1440p (although everything was double imaged or blurred)

Hi all

Currently facing an issue that there doesn't seem to be much info on. i had initially posted about my new gpu losing signal to monitor and fans ramping up to 100% however pixilation also occurs at times with resolution seemingly looking as though it dropped down to 144p although ncp still shows 1440p. (text double images , overall blur and some icons cannot even be distinguished)
Taking a printscreen of the issue actually shows the image as normal once I restart and view the images.

I have tried suggested fixes such as using the original nvidia adapter( i was using the 12vhpwr conn that came with my gigabyte 1000w psu)
Aswell as using DDU before reinstalling the gpu
Trying a different Display port cable
This issue also occurred on a completely different pc with this card(my previous 9900k build)
I resorted to RMA but the card was returned stating no fault found.
The issue is Random and even running stress tests does not trigger the issue (it can happen a few times a day or once a week)

Pc Specs:
13900K
Gigabyte z690 aorus ultra
6000mhz DDR5 CL36(2x16)
RTX 4080 Palit Gamerock
gigabyte UD1000GM
3tb nvme drive
Fractal Lumen s36 aio
Monitor: Alienware 1440p 240hz (AW2721D)
