Hey

So today a prebuild pc arrived one of those where you pick the parts and they put it together for you and while i'm sure any experienced pc expert here would feel despair looking at the parts list i have it and i'm trying to work with it.

I have a few issues i need to figure out that are giving me an actual headache atm. The first being the internet speed. Despite the download speed being show below being really fast it seems to take forever to actually download even relatively small files.

Here is an example of me trying to download a mod manager for rimworld. How does this make sense with my download speeds?

I am someone who is horrible with anything pc related and my head hurts trying to figure out the worst of the issues i have been having so i hope to be able to fix some starting with this one. If anyone has suggestions on how to figure out what's making my downloads so slow despite the fast connection please let me know.

Edit: But despite the slow browser downloads steam seems very fast? I am super confused

Edit2: What does it mean by resuming? I have not downloaded that on this pc before yet.

What is the internet speed you pay for? Might exceed the advertised speed. Mine does but the VPN takes 100 to keep it happy. 500Mbps plan. No VPN 600. VPN enabled 500+.

I pay for internet that's "up to 1gb download" Usually it is more like 600mbps but that's still really fast.

Still having issues with browsing feeling slow. Livestreams buffering when i watch them, Images loading in chunks, Pages loading slow, Randomly getting kicked out of game lobbies for i assume losing internet for a second etc. All things that usually mean slow internet but everytime i do the speed test the speed there is fine.

I also did a ping test where i ping cloudflare 50 times through the cmd menu on someone's recommendation to see if there is packet loss and nothing there either.

It feels like something is really affecting my internet speed but i have no idea what.

Often this is due to a rogue driver in the networking stack. As a test, do the following...
  1. Enter the command ncpa.cpl in the Run command box, the Network Connections Control Panel dialog will open.
  2. Right-click on your active network adapter and select Properties from the drop-down list.
  3. You will see a list of checkboxes, some are checked and some are not. Make a list o those that ARE checked, so you can return things the way they are later.
  4. Uncheck ALL boxes EXCEPT the 'Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)', leave that checked (and ONLY that one).
  5. Click OK
  6. Close all windows and reboot (to ensure unwanted drivers are not loaded.
Now see what your download speeds are like. If you notice an improvement then post screenshots (to a cloud service) of your list of checkboxes and I'll advise which ones you need to have checked. You may need to post more than one screenshot to fit them all in.

This worked! Thank you so much! Should I reenable them one by one or are they all unnecessary anyways? I'm also not sure about leaving IPv6 deactivated. Is their any downside to it?

You really need the Client for Microsoft Networks and File & Printer Sharing enabled (the Windows firewall depends on those). If you stream video or audio then you need the QoS Packet Scheduler enabled to prioritise low latency traffic like streamed video and audio. You also need Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) both enabled - there is no good reason now not to enable IPv6. If you have a VPN installed then you'll need to enable the network driver for that, and any other third-party networking products you may have that employ network drivers in this list.

The remaining boxes can be left unchecked. They are really only needed when you are connected to a largish local LAN, these discovery protocol drivers help in developing the network topology.
