Except thats an AMD quad, and ONE 5770, and using a 600w no name PSU...

Hi guys. I love reading the comments...I always laugh by a$$ off thanks to all the idiots. Now, I'm not dogging on those who ask "noob" questions. Nothing wrong with that at all; everyone is a noob at some point. But luis1's comment takes the cake.

On a side note, I built a very similar system (almost the same specs, different brands) and couldn't be happier. The only hardware differences were 8GB RAM, modular PSU (XFX 650), and HAF 912 case(with 2 added megaflows). The only things that put it over $1k were the gaming keyboard and mouse. Nice to know I wasn't completly off the ball when I built it.

Love these SBMs, even when they are not parts I would use. Thanks Tom's

it is certainly your prerogative to believe that, as it is mine to disagree. :)

Are you sure you're not comparing to the older system running dual GTX 460s in SLI?

2x2Gb on a $1000 system? Epic Fail anyone?

2x4GB Ripjaw's for $79:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231308, still inside the budget.

And the massive value of the 6950 2GB makes one wonder if it is possible to squeeze CF's 6950 on a $1000 budget.

lets take the $500 PC:

AMD Phenom II X4 925 $125
AMD boxed heatsink/fan $0

Pick a 8/8x CF MOBO with USB3:

ASRock 870 EXTREME3 AM3 AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 $90
G.Skill 4 GB (2 x 2 GB) DDR3-1333 Model F3-10666CL9D-4GBNS $40

And borrow the PSU from the $2000 PC:
Seasonic SS-850HT: 850W, ATX12V v2.31, 80-Plus Silver $130
2x GIGABYTE GV-R695D5-2GD-B Radeon HD 6950 2GB $530 ($490 after MIR)
WD Caviar Green WD7500AARS 750GB IntelliPower 64MB cache $55
Asus DRW-24B1ST 24x DVD Burner $18.99

Total $988, $948 after MIR. Add another $40-$65 for your choice of case.

One might point that it is possible to use a $30 case and a $40 HDD and keep the total price below $1000, but while there are a few good single plate HDDs below $50,at $40 the choices are slim, to say the least, and a $30 case WILL have problems with dual 6950s.

There is no point picking a $60 MOBO for CF in 16x/4x mode, or using 1GB 6950 for CF.

So i concede that it is NOT possible to squeeze CF 6950 2GB in a $1000 budget and build a balanced gaming PC with today prices, but we are almost there, given or taken a few bucks , MIRs and combos.

Maybe Newegg could offer a combo inside the $1000 budget with 2GB 6950CF.

And i suggest that SBM's HDDs are single plate desings, given the greater reliability( less plates equals less chance of failure, less heat and noise) and the fact that the smaller capacity makes drive backup and mirroing easier.

The GPU in that system doesn't compare. Upgrade the GPU and the PSU tog o with it and you're looking at a 1k system aswell.

If your talking about the 6990 they do have OC VS stock DB levels. If you look the stock card is quieter (than the OC 6990 not the 590) and STILL performs better than the 590. So at the stock levels the DB levels are closer and its not like the 590 is a quiet card you will still here that card so you will still need to turn the volume up and or throw some headphones on. Now if the card was silent that would be great however in my case the fans I have are noisy to begin with lol.

[citation][nom]landos[/nom]Any chance we could get a noise dba assessment of the OC versus not OC, or the 2K vs. 1K vs 500 machines?[/citation]Maybe next time, the articles are already finished and I'm betting that some of the system's have already been torn down and packed for shipping. You should make this same suggestion in the $500 machine's article if you haven't already, and probably the comparison article tomorrow, just to be certain it gets to all three builders and the master architect.

Nice Build I spent nearly the same amount and got:
Case:Corsair 600T
Motherboard: MSI 890FXA-GD70
GPU: EVGA GTS450
PSU:Thermaltake TR2 600w
RAM: DDR3 XMS CAS 7 2x2gb
CPU: AMD Phenom II 965 Black
OS:WIN 7 Home 64 bit
DVD/RW: ASUS 24x
HARD DRIVE: Seagate 500gb
Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper TX2

Hmm... This case would look a lot better if it were made to look like brushed aluminum instead of plastic, or even a gloss black.
?
What person thought of this rediculous design :/

I have to admit Im a bit surprised by the build for many reasons. A lot of people use Windows .. a $1000 is more than sufficient to go north of the 4.5GB comfort zone for windows 7 (anyone on a laptop can probably verify what Im talking about). Also, you've got nearly a $300 video card, and a cruddy hdd, instead of a $100 card and $200 in a good ssd. I mean even intel is making video advertisements warning about the dangers of hdd storage and championing the switch over to ssds for mainstream pcs. -- its not really cutting edge once intel starts pushing it across the board. Come on Tom's Hardware .. join the 21st century. You're welcome here! 😛

Um you know this is a gaming built right? And wile a SSD would add some load and boot performance taking the money away from the GPU to add a SSD would wile playing a game give you much worse performance. Thanks for playing better luck next time. :sol:

By how much did the CPU cooler fail to clear that case fan? It would be good to know whether a different CPU cooler would have worked without ditching the fan.

I hope your joking for your sake,ibuypower.com should read rippoff/noob.com

Wile I agree that building your own is better, it seems ibuypower is at least much cheeper than dell and at least gives you real parts not 130w PSU lol. So I dont know that they are ripping anybody off.

I found it funny that guy put a link to ibuynoobpower on a build your own forum, also the editors totally screwed up the 500 dollar system,it won't even work.

It was funny him linking that build saying how it was so great when it was in fact a garbage build when looked at from what you "could " have for the same amount of money lol. Like oh your 360 is so great huh I just pulled the trigger on this sweet nintendo 64 and it was only $200
