System error when trying to print

My Hp 1210xi printer was working perfectly and then suddenly I
received the message: "System Error", unable to print document
because of system error. What type of error is this? I’ve unistalled
the HP software and drivers four times but to no avail. I can use the
sanner portion of the printer through Windows XP, and I can even print
out a page using HP’s Toolbox. So, this tells me at least my cable is
ok. HP Tech support wants me to try "generic" drivers? I can’t
download them because it’s a 166 mb file. (I only have dial-up) It
would take a week to order the CD version. I can’t wait that long.
Also, I would hate to unistall Windows, but if that’s what it would
take, well, then I will.
Would an automatic Windows update cause this problem?

Have you tried a System Restore?
Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore
You can go back up to 90 days. If no positive result, go here to do
a complete uninstall and reinstall of the culprit printer. Unplug printer.
Uninstall & reinstall Printer. Just make sure you install the software
first and DO NOT plug the printer in until told to do so.

This is a USB printer. I have tried using system restore several times
and that was of no help. I’ve cleared the sprint spooler, deleted all
references to the printer in all areas including the registry. I’ve
ran Norton System Works and PC Doctor and everything comes back clean.
Except in PC Doctors printer test, I get the same message when I try
to print. I just wish I knew what the error, "System Error" really
meant!
Tomorrow I may buy another printer (an Epson?) and see what happens.
If it p;rints, I’ll keep it! If I get the same message, I guess I will
have no choice but to re-install Windows XP and start fresh.

If you can print a page in the HP Toolbox, your cables and printer are fine.
But........the problem is the app you are using to print. You may be using
the
HP Director. Try a different app like MS Word, Wordpad or Notepad and see
if you still get the error. Uninstalling the app does not delete the Registry
settings for the printer. Did you follow the instructions in my first
response?
When to Connect the printer to the PC is the crux of the situation!
Uninstall & reinstall Printer

Byte:
I tried printing from every program I have. Word, PowerPoint,
Publisher, notePad, plus a "test print" from the printer properties.
I got the error message with all of them.
This morning I bought a new HP all-in-one printer (1315xi) and it
prints perfect! So, what does that tell me? Windows XP had to be ok.
Nothing wrong with the system there. The problem must have been with
the printer, right?
I still don’t understand it, but what I will do is take that printer
and hook it up to another computer to see what happens! If it doesn’t
print, then it definately was the printer. However, if it prints, I’m
going to be very confused!
