Whats better Tbird 700 or duron 800 overclocked to 900 or higher?
what I want to do with my comp is video capture/editing DVD ripping (backup) *grin* and gaming.
I'm just wondering if higher clock is better or more cache.
Any help is appreciated

Go for the T-bird 700 and OC it. As far as I know the T-bird is better for that kind of stuff.

Naw, I say the Duron.

HEre are the comparables:

AMD Thunderbird 700 at 800-850
Price: $110 (Including good heatsink and fan)
Speed: 850MHz

AMD Duron 800 at 1000
Price: $100 (Including good heatsink and fan)
Speed: 1000MHz (But of course the Duron doesn't perform quite as good, but you still have more performance for less money)

For what I know the AMD Thunderbird performs better in FlaskMPEG, so if you don't mind to spend more money...

I spent last weekend making backup copies of rented DVD's...
Go for the T-Bird.

The 800 T-bird will clock to 1G, just make sure the HSF is good, and you have the right mobo (Asus or Abit).

Well I already have a tbird 700 and the highest I could overclock it was 800 MHz (It just would not go higher) and now I've ordered a duron 800 for my dad and I can take that for myself if the duron 800 is better for overclocking. I just ordered a globalwin FOP38 so I think I'm pretty confidant in my new fan arriving.
I've modded my case already too with an intake on the front and the side (near the graphics cards and CPU) and a blow hole (right underneath the power supply) I was anticipating my 700 would go higher than 800 but at 850 it would only get to the windows desktop and crash immediatly, then would not even get to the desktop any more on later attempts.

I'll go with what you guys say and I'll test the duron hopeing it will work better with the PC150 memory I ordered rather than my PC133 generic crap.
Thanks for the help

You'll get better performance out of a oc'd T-bird for the applications your using. Editing is cache dependent... the Duron has a small cache (comparitively speaking).

Tom had a cpu fan review. go with the athlon more L2 cache. read the review get the best fans and overclock yourself into ghz land

ATI RADEON 32MB DDR RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was assuming he was in the market for a new chip, and knowing that the 800 will reach 1G, while the slower chips will only clock a hundred or so more, I thought I would mention it...in my area the 800 is about 15 bucks more than the 700...
