SBS the problem is we can send you the facts, and the stories about families torn apart by this, but you won't believe it. Unless you experience it yourself because you don't really want to know. As you so apply put it "blah blah blah". It is hard to see with your eyes closed and hard to hear with your ears covered.

Besides aren't we supposed to stop political discourse on Tom's or is it only stop after you finish pushing your point of view and cover your ears?

Not to mention all the protestors. Where were they?
This is why I don't bat an eye at their antics. I would be willing to bet that most if not all of these protestors haven't read the order and are simply going on what others say about it. There are going to be cases where it is misinterpreted or misapplied but that will be the exception and can be dealt with on a case by case basis. No need to cry "the sky is falling".

I understand your reasoning but i think for people who were already on the airplanes to land and be told they are being deported is a bit extreme i think that situation is a bit unique and they should have been allowed to stay imagine you fly to France or wherever and this happens to you.

The order does allow for those already in transit to be considered for entry. They will be processed. Not sure how you determine that as some people come from places that take days or weeks to get here, but I can see them using this to let people who manage to get here and who are not a threat to enter.

What happened was 2 brothers from Iraq that had been granted assylm here had been involved in making IED by their finger prints. The GOP congress demanded a response so new vetting procedures were put in place which slowed issuance of new visas until all were trained. So the processing of visa slowed down until everyone got up to speed and it took about 6 months. But at NO time was there any ban, that is an alternate reality that Trump and his team is spreading. There was never a ban that is the fact, until Trump's last month.

Trump's order isn't banning entry at least as far as I interpret it from reading it. The order stops entry but allows exceptions on a case by case basis. This is being done to give us time to work out a better way to protect us from people who wish us harm using legal channels to enter the country.

So, slowing it for 6 months while we train, or suspending it (but allowing exceptions on a case by case basis) while we figure out a new approach isn't that different to me. But read it for yourself and decide. I just feel it is being blown out of proportion. But that is my opinion. Ok, time to get off the political wagon and get back to helping others fix some problems with their computers...

THAT in a nutshell is what few people are doing... Most take what is presented to them, from various sources and trust what they are told is the truth, when in fact there is such a spin and omitted details, as to make our current leadership look bad. No change in tactics from those who sought to, rightly or wrongly, take up low and dirty tactics during the campaign (and even to a point, before.)

I find it interesting that people are citing as fact that Obama banned these countries. This article at Snope's says something different - http://www.snopes.com/trump-immigration-order-obama/

This is completely false. In 2011 they found two Iraqi immigrants were possibly incorrectly processed and so the administration slowed down, not stopped, processing that specific kind of visa application from only Iraq while new screening protocols were drafted and implemented to make sure it didn't happen again. There was still a slow stream of immigrants from Iraq during that time and those screening protocols are still in place.

You know you are wasting your time the Trumpets are interested in the truth just spin. But here is one try in case any want to uncover their eyes to read it:

Sec. 3 (c) To temporarily reduce investigative burdens on relevant agencies during the review period described in subsection (a) of this section, to ensure the proper review and maximum utilization of available resources for the screening of foreign nationals, and to ensure that adequate standards are established to prevent infiltration by foreign terrorists or criminals, pursuant to section 212(f) of the INA, 8 U.S.C. 1182(f), I hereby proclaim that the immigrant and nonimmigrant entry into the United States of aliens from countries referred to in section 217(a)(12) of the INA, 8 U.S.C. 1187(a)(12), would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, and I hereby suspend entry into the United States, as immigrants and nonimmigrants, of such persons for 90 days from the date of this order (excluding those foreign nationals traveling on diplomatic visas, North Atlantic Treaty Organization visas, C-2 visas for travel to the United Nations, and G-1, G-2, G-3, and G-4 visas).

Sec. 5. (c) Pursuant to section 212(f) of the INA, 8 U.S.C. 1182(f), I hereby proclaim that the entry of nationals of Syria as refugees is detrimental to the interests of the United States and thus suspend any such entry until such time as I have determined that sufficient changes have been made to the USRAP to ensure that admission of Syrian refugees is consistent with the national interest.

(d) Pursuant to section 212(f) of the INA, 8 U.S.C. 1182(f), I hereby proclaim that the entry of more than 50,000 refugees in fiscal year 2017 would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, and thus suspend any such entry until such time as I determine that additional admissions would be in the national interest.

One interesting point the countries on the band list did not produce any of those that have committed terrorist acts in the USA. Just Muslim countries w/o Trump business interest. Now doesn't that make you feel safer?

To begin with, it is not a ban, but I doubt that I can convince any of you of that.

Second, it will not affect in any way the 187 Google employees or any other employee of an American company as long as they do not leave America while this temporary pause is in effect. And should they have to leave, as long as they are not going to one of these 7 countries or another country for radicalization and terrorist training, at most they will have to spend a little more time being screened on return. I'm guessing it will take them longer to get through the TSA lines to board their flights than it will take to go through customs since all of these tech company employees will have current and proper paperwork.

My question is: Why are we hiring anybody from these 7 countries when I'm certain there are many American tech workers who have been pushed out of jobs recently to hire lower cost foreigners that could fill these jobs?

As for the immigrants fart roses argument, let me remind you that for every immigrant success story I am sure that there is an immigrant failure story that includes criminal activity or living on welfare.

What tech companies really need to be worrying about is what the Trump administration is going to do with the H1B type programs. I'm sure they will do something radical like simply enforce the part of the program that requires a company to prove that they can't find an American citizen with the skills instead of just rubber stamping applications like the Obama administration did. Ask those former Disney workers if they'd prefer to have their jobs or a free flow of lower cost foreign workers.

Oooo. Oooo. I just realized something. All those immigrants who founded companies had to do so in evil America. And many moved from their wonderful countries so they could grow their companies and get rich.

Just pointing out some of the "alternative facts" to put the issue in perspective.

Logic. Don't they teach people logic anymore?

Without taking a position on the executive order, I just want to point out that corporations are self-serving, by law. If a CEO takes actions not in line with the financial interests of the company and its share holders, they can (and do) get sued.

What corporations want is the best workers for the lowest pay. They will oppose anything which potentially shrinks their labor pool. So, it's really a foregone conclusion they wouldn't like this.

What I'm more concerned about, as far as Trump's policies pertain to the tech industry, is how such moves affect America's brand. There's already some antipathy towards US-based companies, partly due to Snowden's revelations & concerns they raised about the NSA spying on foreigners. Anything unpopular that Trump does will only add to the reasons for the rest of the world to buy non-American products & services.

USA wasn't Evil in the past ... it all changed after 1990 when they defeated the USSR and wanted a new enemy so they picked up the Muslims.

Half My family are immigrants .. but TODAY after 40 years of living in USA they are thinking of leaving. they dont feel safe any more and 2 families already moved to europe.

Logic would say it was more friendly to middle eastern immigrants back when they came and started their businesses than now with the Trump ban. So those that would have come to America and started the next great thing are looking else where these days.

When I was a fresh graduate with an BSEE degree, I applied for pretty much every major tech company I had ever heard of (dozens and dozens of applications).

I got exactly 2 responses from all of that (and no interviews). One automated rejection email from Intel, and one from TI suggesting technical sales would somehow be a more appropriate position for an Engineering degree. It was very discouraging.
So I guess I'm curious why the tech industry insists that they need foreign engineers when American applicants are getting ignored entirely. Or I at least want to know why I'm expected to pretend that increased competition in a field that is already flooded with unemployed millennial engineers is somehow supposed to be good for me.

Yep, just more misinformation and re-spouting the party line on the so-called "ban." Tom's, you're no better than any of the other fake-news muckraking outlets. Stick to what you know.

Anyone who lived here for 40 years can't really believe this. Yes, there are some anti-muslim bigots, but they're in the small minority. Most Americans do not want or perceive a war with Muslims. So, I'm truly sorry you feel that way.

I obviously can't answer your question, directly. See my first post, above, if you haven't.

However, I'm curious whether you had any internships, and whether you pursued any of the hot specialties. You can browse jobs boards and see which skills are in most demand. Then, take online classes and get involved with open source projects to come up to speed.

Something else you might pursue is trying to figure out why your resume gets overlooked. HR departments and hiring managers often get flooded with resumes, and their mindset is typically that of trying to thin the herd as much as possible. So, the reason yours doesn't make the cut could be down to just a couple particular problems. If you can talk to a hiring manager, in your field, and just get them to give you some resume feedback, that might make all the difference.

Depending on your area (especially EE), then you might be able to get your foot in the door by taking a QA position. Startups, non-profits, hackathons, or kickstarter/indiegogo projects might be some other avenues for making connections, getting experience points, and leveling-up.

Good luck. I know it's not easy, but if you really feel tech is the right field for you, then stick with it and you'll eventually find fulfilling work that utilizes your potential.

If you're applying to companies like Intel and TI, competition is going to be insane. They're going to hire the best and the brightest from wherever they can find them. In general, if you're applying to companies that you already know about, then chances are other people know about them too and are applying there as well. I sent out probably 60+ applications during my last year of university (graduated BSEE in 2015), and most of them were companies I'd never heard of until I started crawling through job boards.

Hilarious that they predicted the comments would be "volatile." I think you probably need to go to UC Berkley for that, Trump advocates generally don't attack people and set things on fire.

For this thread not to degenerate into an all-out flame war, I think comments should be about the story, or at least the tech industry, in some way.

Certainly, any post that compares/contrasts groups of people, or tries to characterize many by the actions of a few, is likely to provoke a reaction and probably not constructive to the main topic.

Just trying to help.

Many I've talked to have the same issue. And when I've met some of the people at this businesses I wonder how they got the job there they seem so... challenged. It seems like it's not how good you did in school or what degree you have but who you know that can get you in the door. You have to apply thru a website and 99% of the time you never get any feed back. I think tech companies are hiring more from overseas so they can pay them less and have a harder time leaving and going elsewhere.

I find it funny for months the Tumpites were saying the election was rigged and they would riot and force change if Hillary won. Now Trump is getting what he told his followers to do and all that encouraged it are surprised the other side is doing what Trumpites promised to do all along.

You shouldn't keep promising to burn your neighbors house down for months and then be surprised if he burns yours down. What was the old saying "you reap...
