I'm closing in on a new computer and plan to add an external RAID array for project files that will allow the enclosure to handle the array. I'm planning to buy USB3 enclosure like those offered by Mediasonic, as I've been told Thunderbolt is overkill for my needs. I'm looking at NAS drives, but this isn't a NAS by definition (I don't believe). Most articles review external drives such as the WD Passport, so I'm wondering if anyone can share their experience with choosing their drives for my planned setup.

Thanks

If this is going to be running any significant fraction of 24/7, I'd restrict drive selection to server-rated drives, quite honestly. Less long-term hassle with the drives, themselves.

I don't like WD's real-world longevity numbers (from personal experience) and would avoid their offerings. Seagates might be a bit louder, but it's my experience that they are more robust and reliable over the long-haul.

I know that others will feel differently about that; so, let the flames begin. 😉
