I am trying to fix my friends system. He has bought a 900 T-Bird, Abit KT7, 256 PC133.We have put his old graphics,sound,cd,floppy onto the system but are having big problems.

The graphics card is a creative annihalator.It seems that the sound card is the problem with it running fine until I try to use media player or enter Half Life, whereupon it hangs within a couple of seconds.As far as I can see from the message boards there is an inherent problem with the KT7 and Vortex 1 cards (I think it is a Vortex 1).I have d/l all the new drivers and no change, same problem.Changed PCI slots (not using 1 or 5).Formatted a number of times and started again to no avail.

I think that we need a new sound card but can ne1 shed light on whether the current set up is trotally inconpatible.

What os are you using? I had similar problems with a vortex 2/win2k/via kt133 setup. Take out the sound card and enable the onboard sound and see if that works. My system works fine now that I took out my mx300. There are plenty of threads both here and in the win2k section on this very issue. To sum them up...no vortex 2 in win2k with a via chipset! From what I can tell, Phillip's new card might be the way to go. I just read a thread which, if i understood it correctly, stated that the mx300 is working under whistler.
