Newish pc (6 months or so) switched from a GTX 1080 to an RTX 4090 Phantom.

Specs:
RTX 4090 Phantom
7800X3D
32gb ddr5
Samsung 980 nvme ssd

  • 3 windows reinstalls
  • Done ddu
  • Rma 4090 twice
  • Tried nvidia profile inspector and control panel settings

For whatever reason all the games I've played seem to have terrible LOD or texture pop in.

Npcs that can be right in front or beside me will morph into different textures, like the long distance models are loading in much closer than they should.

Small objects, like cups, pots, gravestones, torches, ect will fade into existence when im just a few feet away. Lighting and shadows will pop in.
Textures will change 5 feet in front of me - tent low poly to high in rdr2, boxes change from smooth surface to textured and detailed - starfield.
Rachet and clank rift apart- rocks and walls will be jagged and low res, move 4.5 feet away and pop! Suddenly textured.

Its almost like the draw distance for textures or something has been set to minimum but im running all these games at max settings.

Originally i thought it was just rdr2 but every game ive tried has the exact same issue

Games with issue
Rdr2
Ac odyssey
Total war warhammer 3
Baulders gate 3
Rachet and clank rift apart
World of warcraft
Cyberpunk
Jedi survivor
Starfield

Not sure what else to try at this at point, nothing i try seems to make any difference.

I came from 1080, i7 7700k and i had none of these issues.
Weirdly feel like I've downgraded.

From what ive seen online, only a few other users have reported the same thing. About 12 maybe.

Wondering if it could be a nvidia driver issue or should i look elsewhere for a resolution for my issues?

Its killing gaming for me and im tempted to just sell my 4090 and get a 3090 or something, since that doesnt seem to have these issues from what i can see on line....

Yeah that seems strange alright, especially with such a high end GPU and CPU. Did you talk to Gainward at all? If so, did they offer any suggestions as to what might be causing it?

I saw one person recently say AC Odyssey was showing CPU usage at and below 10%, on spec that was well above min reqs on both CPU and GPU, and that a recent Nvidia driver update improved it noticeably. However his PSU is not one of the more trusted brands, and isn't well rated. Since AC Odyssey is far too old to have had any recent patching or game specific driver tweaks, it makes it look like Nvidia has had driver issues lately.

I don't recall you saying you did any extensive monitoring, so that IMO would be the logical step. Fire up MSI Afterburner and set it to show CPU and GPU usage and temps, frame time, and FPS onscreen while playing. I would as well set it to monitor GPU power draw, and look for drops when those textures are slow to LOD.

As well, to rule out any possible power issues, what's the exact brand and model of your PSU, and have you tried running the PC off another wall outlet to rule out a bad AC power connection? Power problems from either of these could definitely be the issue, and might show in the GPU power draw stats.

I've owned a Gainward GPU before, and it was one of the most stable GPUs I've ever had. It was a mere "Green" model, you know, when the energy saving trend first kicked in. It took an OC better than any GPU I've ever owned though. Gainward has always been a pretty trusted GPU brand, so I seriously doubt the 4090 is the problem here. Maybe consider renaming the thread to Texture pop in on high end PC until we get this figurwed out. ;)

Thank you for your reply!

So first things first, i should clarify i didn't build this pc, as i have difficulties with my hands so i opted to buy from the people who built my last pc, company named PcSpecialists. So i have no line with gainward, however, since pcs has rma'd my card twice, the first time they changed it out for a palit 4090,Then gave me another gainward. so i feel like its not the make that is the issue.

I definitely suspect nvidia drivers but i have ddu'd my driver and found an old one from feb and the issue remained, so i am unsure how far this issue goes back if it is indeed a driver issue. Ill have to test ac odyssey again, it has been about 2 months since i last tested it but probably hasn't fixed the issue lol

Sorry yes i left out my monitoring, i have done hwinfo with heaven benchmark running , samsungs ssd tester thing and 3d mark, all seem normal. Haven't used afterburner to test but not sure if itll show any difference. Also tried nvida overlays monitoring but was the same as the rest.

The psu is CORSAIR 1200W HX SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS® PLATINUM, ULTRA QUIET ( overkill i think but ah well) Unfortunately, where i am currently the pc has to be plugged into a extension cable ( have tried others to rule out) as i have only one plug available for me in my room currently. Il be able to test the bad ac out when i move in the next 6 months or so. BBut for now i will give the after burner stuff a go to see if any drops in power draw happen

Yeah im definitely happy to have the gainward back, i like it better than the palit, since that sounded like a mini jet engine lol

I have amended the title to your recommend title :) thank you!

I really want to figure this out, gaming is something i really love but this is totally killing it for me, and totally kills my want to play when it happens ( which is basically straight away lol)

Whats weirdest to me, is that its consistent, its almost the same distance for all games,

Yeah that is a very good PSU, so very unlikely to be the culprit. I however DO NOT like the idea of ANY kind of extension cord being used. Well made surge protectors would be the only exception, since they typically don't have longer than a 6' power cord, which is very large gauge and grounded.

MSI Afterburner is better to use than those others you mentioned because it can show the stats I mentioned in real time onscreen. It's too bad you can't at least try another wall outlet, because a faulty one can be a real problem. It's also not good to overload one circuit in a house/apt, it can cause problems.

The extension cord is a surge protector, i guess i could get a ups or something .

Msi stats don't look wrong i think, no massive drops in power when pop in is occurring, nothing else seems to drop either, really not sure. no massive dips unless i went into a loading screen or something

kinda wish i had just stuck with the 1080 at this stage, didn't have these issues back then lol

just to put more detail on things im experiencing. I am getting some obvious pop in, but say a box 5 feet from me , and i move back and forth and itll change from far distance model (far to close so you can see its low rez glory ) then move forward and pop! normal texture, move back again slightly and pop! low rez again. same with rocks, buildings. even npcs sometimes

Lighting also is an issue, shadows too.

ive had a few others talk about this issue who have 40xx cards, wondering if its maybe an issue with amd/nvidia working togeter or ddr5 ram? or maybe a rogue bios setting. i really hope i can fix this someday :(

Yo ive got this same problem, except with a Gigabyte Gaming OC 4080.

My 4070ti has no issues at all, What gives?

12600k
EVGA 1000w PSU
32gb ddr4 3200

same specs in both systems but only the 4080 acts up...

Battlefield V
Baldurs Gate 3
Skyrim
League of Legends
WoW
Elden Ring
Alan Wake 2
Warhammer 3 TW

are all affected by this so its gotta be something with the card.

Do you have two pcs or is it a duel gpu set up?

Also i have now had 5 4090's, and still have the same issue - i have replaced the whole pc and it still happens. i wonder if its the driver for 4090/4080 as i have only seen others who have these cards talk about this...

maybe i should get myself a 4070ti lol
