about ayear back, oen of the labs in my college received a bunch of the new super thing imacs(about 20 of them)... strangely enough, one of the techs told me that they broke down more than any other computer available in the~400 computer lab, more than 80% of them being pcs (rest being older macs, dating as far back as 2006).

The comments about Apple on this site is just unbelievable. Oh no they soldered the memory to the logic board... Like that doesn't happen on the PC side? There is a reason why this is an entry level system. HP, Lenovo, and others are not immune to doing this either.

Most Apple customers already know the system they want or need. And honestly 8gb of memory is a lot of memory for a system that is already high efficient.

Most of you people on here would buy an Apple anyway so your comments are as worthless as doggie-coins.

Just like the other commentator stated, there comes a time when you don't want to tinker with computers anymore and just want something that works.

On a desktop type PC, I have never heard of such a thing, though I would not doubt if one does exist like this, but it would be quite rare. Not that I care, but I think it is silly (not criminal) to solder memory to the motherboard because you want it to be a couple millimeters skinnier.

What a bunch of whiney crybabies.

Since when is 8Gb not enough for a system today, especially an entry level system.
The next step up is 16Gb. Riiiight.

And yeah, go have a cry about the cost "boohoo Apple are so expensive, waahhhh, mommy!!"

There are plenty of things in life that are more expensive than you'd like or can afford. Put on your big boy pants and deal with it.

This is probably the most unenvironmentally friendly move on their part. So if we wanted to replace or upgrade we have to replace the entire motherboard at an added expense AND waste. Come on Apple. Don't pull this tactic to save a few bucks as it will cost the consumers more money and waste for the environment.

Just like every smartphone, tablet, nettop, ultra-slim laptops, tons of embedded platforms, etc.

Get used to it because I suspect all-soldered all-in-one computers are going to become far more common over the next few years. I would not be surprised to see RAM integrated directly in the CPU package about five years down the road.

Look at how thin they are and tell me if you can fit ram slots on that thing. Common be reasonable.

Nah, they're not. The fact that no where on that page they show the backside means everything. Notice how the pics are all at an angle ... The reason is obvious, it's much bulkier than they want you to realize. Also, if think I'm talking out of my ass and that it their trick isn't obvious enough, my uncle is a photographer and that's one of the techniques they use to make stuff SEEM thinner.

Haha, expensive, cute. Really, cute. My PC costs around 3k USD. A powerhouse of a 3-screener. SSDs, Velociraptors, OC'ed i7, and a 7950, everything in it is high end, except the mobo. You know, something the tech-savvy know wipes the floor with most Apple junk.

So if us PC users are so cheap, why are we so many of us building PCs in the thousandS (plural) of dollars ?

It's funny, but I've been called a kiddie multiple times. ALWAYS by Apple fanboys. Some guy even preached to me (and a few other network techs) that Macs liberate your creativity. We obviously made fun of him. "If you need a different type of computer to "liberate" your creativity, then you're not very creative to begin with, are you?" Was the answer of choice, because let's face it, Apple's entire marketing campaign is aimed at people so technologically inept that they barely know how to turn a computer on.

" the motherboard (or what Apple likes to call a Logic Board) in all of the $1099 iMacs will be identical, making them cheaper to mass produce. "

By this logic, if the boards still had DIMM sockets, they'd be identical, too, and thus cheaper to mass produce.

No - the real cost saving comes from the fact that it's cheaper to solder ram directly to the board than to solder DIMM sockets and populate them.
