Both Windows and MacOS suck. Ubuntu is faster and free. No hardware limitations, it can run even on a supercomputer with thousands of processors!! Linux is the future.

[citation][nom]V8VENOM[/nom]All one has to do is read this thread and see why Microsoft PC buyers are completely retarded (homosexual logo, oh brother what a turd) -- but hey, keep buying those junk PC's and enjoy your misery.[/citation]

You like that sleek simple design do you??.....Don't really have to worry about cables.... options... distractions and such....all the big logos with their light heartedness just smiling back at you as you smile on them....It is simple is not?....Yea.....I thought so....
If you like that perhaps I can sell you a piece of tin foil for an exuberant amount or ....maybe a glass bathrobe with the apple logo on the fany to impress Steve Jobs when he comes to take you away on the next comet Hale-Bopp.

No comment about the substance of this article, but grammatically it could stand an editing. Wrong: "hand?s", "Hyundai?s" - these words are plurals and as such don't take apostrophes.

I've been following the industry for over 15 years and this is the most rubbish article I've ever read on Tom's hardware.
Go read this:
http://www.techreport.com/discussions.x/15269
This site started going down the drain a few years ago but this is just the icing one the cake. I don't wanna see another story from this author ever again.

Since when did "Dell" become synonymous to a PC?
I just bought a Gateway 6180 at Best Buy for $1089 that trashes both of the $2000 laptops mentioned in this article. 4GB ram, 8800GTS w/512MB dedicated, 320GB hd, 17", 2.5Ghz T9300 C2Duo, etc.
Dell is just as overpriced as Apple. Both are huge corporations that charge way too much for the crap they produce and target buyers that are too lazy to shop around and compare. This has to be the most poorly written and researched article I've read all week. Just bad journalism.

I´ve been reading Tom´s from the beginning and I´ve learned so much from articles and forums. Now I feel sad to see this site is going down the drain. As Tuan suggested I´m going to move to another site. Many thanks to all members of Tom´s forums for help, support and knowledge.
Goodbye.

"If you compare specs to specs yes Apple costs the same." No, crom, that is absolutely not the case. Spec for spec, pound for pound, performance for performance, ease-of-use for ease-of-use, eye candy for eye candy, and especially dollar for dollar, the Vista box always wins. Always. If it didn't, I'd be buying Apple. Now go sip your latte . . . .

FYI, another former student approached me about buying a laptop. I was afraid she had fallen for the marketing hype and pressure from her Mactoid boyfriend, but we priced it out and guess who won? Yah, ya'betcha!

And for all you Dell bashers, you need to be looking at the O-U-T-L-E-T store at Dell's site. Heck, you can't buy the components for what the price of their complete systems. Take a look, write down some specs, go to newegg . . . you will be flabbergasted.

You want-to-be nerds are pathetic trying to think of ways to defend pcs. I recently bought macbook pro because it is the best laptop out there bare none. The key here, is Laptop, not desktop.
MacBook Pro, 15-inch, 2.4GHz $1,799.00(anyone can get student discount)
Part Number: MB133LL/A
2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
200GB Serial ATA @ 5400 rpm
SuperDrive 8X DVD+R DL/DVD+RW/CD-RW)
MacBook Pro 15-inch Widescreen Display
Backlit Keyboard

$1799-$200(sell free ipodtouch on ebay)= $1599.

Next time you retards try to compare a dell with a 25% off coupon, don't try comparing it to the full price of a Mac.

Next thing is Warranty:
$239 3 Year Apple warranty(you can take it to any Apple store worldwide for 99% of the repairs)
vs
$200-300 3 year warranty you have to mail in and wait 1-4weeks for repairs.

Then you need to compare the OS.
OSX
vs
XP/Vista

Anyone who thinks OSX sucks, have you ever tried hackint0sh? Obviously not. Did you so called "enthusiasts" forget that OSX runs on top of *NIX?! Limitless possibilities there. Master the crap known as Windows, does not make you an enthusiast. Take some linux courses and get with it.

And for the rest of the "general" population, forget having to buy spyware,malware,virus-scan,firewalls,patch security holes and instead have all that already built into OSX. Once again, did you forget it even has iptables?

The last importance is looks:
MacbookPro
vs
XPS/HP

Do I even need to say more? 1 inch thick and 5.4 pounds. Not only that, it's actually flush on all sides unlike the staggering layers of Dells/HP.
When you open the lid of your dell/hp and let go, does it stay exactly in place, or does it bounce a little bit? (craftsmanship anyone?)

Apple is slightly more expensive on the hardware side, and I certainly wouldn't reccomend anyone buying a Mac Pro especially buying memory from Apple. But when it comes to laptops, who wants a 2 inch/10 pound laptop? The next option is to get a severely underpowered 7"/13" mini laptop missing many standard features.

Buy a MacbookPro for $1599 and build a custom Asus/intel/nvidia/quad core/hackint0sh as a pc.

What happened to Integrity In journalism ? Comparing and Over Priced Mac VS A cherry picked desktop replacement Laptop=fail. The point is for the same price as has been pointed out numerous times already, you could of built a laptop from Dell's inspiron line or HP which is more closer to what mac books are.

This article ruins Tomshardware reputation.

It pretend that the Mac can run Windows, whose main reason is to run games, but does not take in account that the mac Price needs to include the windows price if you want to run games. Then it makes a "Mac Clone", including lots of overpriced components (you don't need a U$S 320 power to run that videocard. I have a Eurocase U$S 100 power supply, and run on it a MSI Geforce 8800 GT 512 Mb Overclocked. It is far, far, far more powerful that the mac, Radeon HD 2600XT, wich cannot get enough FPS to be compared to the 8800 GT (And I are choosing a mid range PC videocard). Then, it includes a Xeon X3360 X2 processor. BAD for games. PCs have lots of better performing processors for gaming, for 300 U$S or less. You can have a Q6600, instead of throwing 1100 U$S at the trash for a Xeon.
And a U$S 100 nforce4 motherboard (instead of the cherry picked U$$430 mother) with a phenom X4 and a Geforce 8800 is FAR, FAR, FAR more fast for games than that crappy Xeon.

The Xeon is for Server and database functions, for which the MAC is a total crap. People choosing server computers will never choose a mac.

Then it says that the mac os is UNIX. But if you really want unix (and you are crazy if you don't choose Linux for that), you need to throw away all that nice GUI interface, and start to using text commands. Then you find that the Apple UNIX is the less user friendly OS, is not totally compatible with standard UNIX, and almost all the unix help you can get on Internet is for Linux. Then the Linux people start to laugh at you very loud for running a Mac.

This article is aimed at people that search information on google (Tomshardware is very high ranked on google). That people will read this article and take it as is. Because is non an entusiast PC, will be missleaded to think that is a fair and honest article (not at all. is an extremly dishonest article), ad will not read the comments, because are too technical to common people.

First off, a discount is a discount no matter what form it comes in but I rather receive a 25% off coupon instead of having to commit fraud in order to get a decent discount.

Secondly, to charge $100 or more just to cut down on the thickness of a laptop and the weight is ridiculous. So what if the laptop weighs a few more pounds. Maybe you shouldn't be so lazy.

Now, there is a very important that you are forgetting. Larger screens have a larger payload. For 1500 bucks, most windows based laptops have either a 17 or 19 inch screen. Of course that is going to be heavier.

As far as warranty, the closest apple store to my house is 40 miles away and with apple repairs, you can't just walk in and say "hey, something is wrong with my laptop" as you have to make an appointment beforehand and if you get an appointment within 5 business days, you are lucky. In the case of dell, I can have a dell technician to my home to repair the item within the next 2 business days which includes saturday. I also have the option to have the parts shipped to me along with any special tools needed to repair the problem and those parts usually show up within two to three business days.

Now, iptables is nothing more than a firewall. I can buy a router for 30 bucks or download free software that does the same thing as iptables.

I can also download free, legit anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-malware, anti-rootkit programs for XP and Vista.

Now, my question is why would anyone spend 1500 dollars on a mac laptop? Let's look at what we could do on a mac laptop. We can do some word processing, some presentations, maybe some database work, look at photos, watch a movie, listen to music. Well, I can do those same exact things on a windows based laptop for half the price with the same performance.

Again, apple/mac not economically sound for the price and especially not for the warranty.

Anyone who thinks OSX sucks, have you ever tried hackint0sh? Obviously not. Did you so called "enthusiasts" forget that OSX runs on top of *NIX?! Limitless possibilities there.

Yes! Exactly. You can add, subtract... erm multiply numbers, and even divide them! Don’t forget that you can browse teh internet AND you can type words too!!! It will even remember the words you type so next time you start you calcu.. I mean Mac, it will have the words stored for you. A bit messy storage and hard to navigate to or away from, but its there. If you’re persistent enough, I’m sure you can find it. Hundreds of other Mac users have. Surely you don’t want to say that you’re dumber than they are? Of course you’re not.

Sure, your new calcu.. I mean Mac. Yes Mac, wont be able to run most of the software out today, but who needs all those violent and flashy games. Good riddance to bad influence for the young.

Not everyone is born to work in professional environment, so who cares if professional programs don’t work under OSX. You can type, browse and even listen to music. If you try hard enough, you might even be able to watch a divx movie or two...but don’t count it. Movies are devils entertainment. Who needs it anyway? You can listen to your Mac while you churn that butter! Yes, it is loud enough for that too! Limitless!

Who cares that you can download beauty extension for that boring windows OS? Its so boring, stable and can run everything... but only the sheep people use it. Dumb people... wanting to run software and not being satisfied with word processing uberness of Mac. (did I mention that Mac can do calculations in real time too! Yes it can! Real time, no joke!)

Still, who cares that you pay more for less and that less cant do much... or most... but it looks dang good while doing it... or... erm... what’s left of it.

HAHA! I had to laugh out loud when I read that the author gives a point to the MacBook for it's "MagSafe" power connector. I work part time at a Best Buy and I PERSONALLY have taken in two MacBooks this year with damaged magsafe power cords. The cable apparently still breaks quite nicely if you tend to yank on the cord to break the magnetic attraction. (I thought that was the whole point of the MagSafe feature... so you wouldn't break it if it got yanked?) So far since January, the PC laptops and the Mac laptops I've taken in for repair are running dead-even for damage at the DC jack due to yanking the cord. Another case of marketing obscuring fact.

http://blogs.chron.com/techblog/archives/2008/08/the_price_difference_between_macs_and_pcs_wid.html

There seems to be some differences in opinion. While macs make well designed products, they definitely come at a price premium.

Another consideration is the very expensive upgrades prices on apples that you mentioned. Most people don't build their own machines and will not be installing memory themselves, let alone hard drives. What you are basically saying is buy a Mac, it makes a great barebones kit. Also telling those of us who do build and know how to get a deal, to buy and install the pieces separately is not a convincing argument that apples cost the same as PC’s. Especially when the ones that are savvy enough to build their own machines know what a poor choice you made in your comparison PC's selection.

The only thing I'll say re: the perennial Mac vs. PC debate is that Apple Macs have always been a good unit for the people they were designed for... The technologically clueless. You pay extra for that hand-holding and if it's worth it to you, then you have chosen the right computer. PC's have always required more effort and knowledge on the part of the user to get the full capabilities of the machine used.

OK, one other thing... Someone once tried to defend their purchase of an iMac to me by saying it could also read PC files and my PC couldn't read his iMac files. My response was, "Why in God's name would I ever want to read a Mac file?" He had no answer.

I know that in 32 pages of comments people must have said this already - but .. GET REAL! Comparing 17" laptop to a 15" one and claiming that 15" one has an advantage cos of MagSafe connector and a remote?! COME ON!

And it's hard not to kick ones head by giving excuses for overpriced computer by comparing it to the other overpriced computer (Envy vs Air). Both are qute, but they both SUCK unless you have extra $$$ to waste. And if you have this much to spend on a smallish portable PC, you don't care about 200$ or 2000$. You can just pick a 20 000$ notebook if necessary - you probably won't care.

What we're all complaining about is Mac PC that AN AVARAGE user will use, vs average PC. Mac has advantage in software, but sorry - i'm not spenhin my half-year's income just to buy a freaking Spotlite and Expose! And I don't care for iPhone integration cos it's one more overpriced gimmick I won't spend my hard earned money on!

When i'm buying my PCs, I go to the cheapest dealer, buy cheapest components in their respective performance range, and I can get:
a) 300$ desktop PC for office/web/music/watching videos etc
b) 700$ kick-ass gaming machine
..and keep in mind that this is 300$/700$ in European prices, which would be more like 230$/500$ if I had bought them in US in e-tail.

Sure, I have to add keyboard, speakers, display, and that's another 500$ (in EU prices, 350$ in US prices) and that's for 24" screen. And than I have to buy me some software too netting probably 200$ more just for Windoze (haven't bothered looking at Win Vista prices for a while). In total, I get a real good gaming machine for 1500$ even if I go all out on this stuff.

Now again, 1500$ in EU (Croatia). If I go to croatian apple-store, I can't even get THIS - http://store.apple.hr/IMC-Apple-Store/WebObjects/Asto.woa/1/wo/P5Y9Bc7ggV0e3Z7dIt9tWg/2.9.1.6.0.0.1.0.1.0.1.7.1.0.1.1.0.1.2.1.0.1.7.1.3.1 - cos' it costs 1800$ without options!

iMac, 20", 2.4GHz CPU, 1GB RAM, 250GB HDD, HD 2400XT, 8x DVD-RW.

For same amount of money I get roughly this:
24" Samsung LCD
Logitech X-540 speakers
ATI HD4870 card
E8400 CPU @ 3GHz
Intel P45 MBO
4x 1GB DDR 800
case with 250mm fans
550W Chieftec PSU with tripple 18A rails and dual PEG connectors (great for HD4870 and E8400 plus a niiiice overclocking headroom)
LG 20x DVD-RW Dual layer
Logitech MX518 mouse and Logitech G15 keyboard
2x 640GB WD drives
Vista Home Premium
Accelero S1 heatsink and 2x 120mm fans
Thermalright Ultra 120

And with this setup, I can do lots of stuff, lots of times faster, smoother, and I'll be much happier than having a 1GB RAM machine in OS X searching stuff through Spotlite or windows in Expose. Oh, and most of stuff there have same or better warranty than this iMac will ever have. I won't even compare it to MacPro, it's a killer machine, but it costs more than I can earn in 6 months and that with me living on pure air in the woods so I can save every single penny. So I'm not going to spend that kind of money, Mac or PC.

[citation][nom]PooprScooper[/nom]You want-to-be nerds are pathetic trying to think of ways to defend pcs. I recently bought macbook pro because it is the best laptop out there bare none.

(played games on it yet? Tried using a Canon, Lexmark or Epson printer on it? Tried using a Razer mouse on it? Tried right clicking yet? Tried running PC software on it yet? Tried not rebuying all your software yet?

That's what I thought b!tch!)

The key here, is Laptop, not desktop.

(from Apple they are both a rip off)

MacBook Pro, 15-inch, 2.4GHz $1,799.00(anyone can get student discount)Part Number: MB133LL/A2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB200GB Serial ATA @ 5400 rpmSuperDrive 8X DVD+R DL/DVD+RW/CD-RW)MacBook Pro 15-inch Widescreen DisplayBacklit Keyboard$1799-$200(sell free ipodtouch on ebay)= $599.

(That is a horrible price. I mean HORRIBLE!! Let me break it down for you Mac Noobs..

HP DV6968
Intel Core 2 Duo Centrino T5750 @2.0Ghz
3 GB Memory (That's MORE than the Macbook)
250GB HDD 5400RPM SATA(That's MORE than the Macbook)
8x CD/DVD DL Burner WITH LIGHTSCRIBE (That's MORE than the Macbook)
Wireless N (Macbook doesn't have it)
HDMI Port Macbook doesn't have it)
Altec Lansing Speakers (Macbook doesn't have it)
15.4" Brightview Screen
Price: $799.

or for $1199 you get 4 GB Memory, 320GB HDD, Blu-Ray player, NVIDIA 8400M Graphics Card. (Model: DV6988CA)

That rapes the MAC at HALF THE PRICE for the DV6968!!

1Next time you retards try to compare a dell with a 25% off coupon, don't try comparing it to the full price of a Mac.

(Uh.... ever tried to service a Mac... I have customers tell me how $hit their warranty is all the time. They go WEEKS without their Mac. A 3 year Warranty through say HP means your laptop is back in 5 days. Also for $350 HP offers a full warranty with drop and smash. So I could throw my HP right at your stupid head for thinking Mac's are better than HP's. Break the HP over your head. Then send it to HP to be fixed and it 5 days or less I have a new laptop. Apple CAN'T TOUCH THAT!!!)

Then you need to compare the OS.OSXvsXP/Vista Anyone who thinks OSX sucks, have you ever tried hackint0sh? Obviously not.

(I've used both. I hate the layout of OSX. We tried configuring a static IP on a Mac and it was the biggest pain in the ass ever. On a PC it's so easy. Also Leopard is MORE unstable than Vista. I have tried your so called "hackintosh" and M$ is still lightyears ahead of Mac. Vista is an excellent OS with great features and excellent stability. Clearly you have never tried a PC cause you are talking out of your ass... that's what I thought...)

Care to STFU now??? Nope... I'm gonna keep going!! I love ripping apart Mac noobs who have no idea what they are talking about.)

http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0926INGFS10108697&catid=25254
That 17" HP (larger than Macbook) WITH A BATTERY weights 2.04kg. Now 1 kilogram = 2.20462262 so do the math retard and you get that laptop weighing about 4.5 lbs. So in actual fact this 17" HP laptop (which is in everyway superior to the macbook) weighs LESS than the Macbook and is only a little thicker. And the 15" laptops are the SAME thickness as the Mac`s.

I sell Mac`s and PC`s and I know what I am talking about. Now go cry in the corner you little Mac noobs!!)
