I just recently reformatted my computer. Now for some reason certain sites are inaccessible to my computer... big sites like yahoo, facebook, and other random sites. But at the same time i can access many websites such as this. When trying to connect to these other websites i get a message such as "The connection was reset" I am plugged into the wall with an Ethernet so there is no router involved. The only firewall i have running is windows firewall. Any suggestions?

You must have a modem or a router somewhere. Try (if you have both) unplugging your router and waiting 30 seconds. Plug it back in and wait for it to boot up. Retry your connection. Also, navigate to your browser options/preferences and make sure that some cookies/javascript are allowed, and those sites are not blocked. If the problem persists, try reinstalling your browser. Sometimes weird things happen.

It is a college connection so i dont have a modem or router in my room. I've used this connection before the reformat with no problems. All java is enabled and the sites are not blocked. Problem occurs in both IE and FireFox

those both seem to me to be server side issues.

I cant think of why a browser, let alone two browsers would give the same messages.

The only advice i can give now would be to reinstall both/either and try again. Maybe try calling the university IT and see if they have any restrictions built into their firewalls for such sites.

Try reposting your issue in the networking section.

More people with a better understanding than me normally check those topics.

Sorry,

I am also having this problem, but it's isolated to just like 3 sites that I use every once in a while. The sites work on a different computer with the same internet connection perfectly fine.

I've also had occasions now and again where the browsers cease working entirely, but my internet connection is fine (i.e. ALL other programs accessing the internet work fine). I end up having to restart the computer (restarting the modem, resetting the connection doesn't work).

It's not a browser-side problem, and it happens in both Firefox in IE.

I tried a few Google searches to see if anyone else has ever had this problem and this is the only result that's close. So perhaps the OP is lurking and he found a solution?

Hello Everyone, i understand that this thread is old, i posted this just in case someone is reading, or having the same problem.

Ive been having this problem for a while now, and i think i figured it out,
if youre able to ping the site , ( click Start->Run-> Type CMD-> then type: ping www . website you want to check .com)
If you get something that looks like this:

Reply from 64.233.161.104: bytes=32 time=106ms TTL=245
Reply from 64.233.161.104: bytes=32 time=79ms TTL=245
Reply from 64.233.161.104: bytes=32 time=78ms TTL=245
Reply from 64.233.161.104: bytes=32 time=89ms TTL=245

Ping statistics for 64.233.161.104:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 78ms, Maximum = 106ms, Average = 88ms

Then your modem is able to acces the site.

If so, then try accessing the site using a proxy, not all of them work well,
try:
www.proxify.org (although its not free for some features)

http://www.filterbypasser.com/ ( i use this and it works for me!)

Hope this works for you, and Good Luck!

I am having the exact same problem. Sometimes my PC will work with certain sites, and others it won't. (I'm becoming more and more inclined to buy a Mac!) Other computers sharing the same connection work fine, but this one, no matter the browser, keeps resetting. Though, the same problem on the same sites has begun on one of our other computers and it's really starting to annoy everybody. If anybody has a fix could they please send me an e-mail:
xkierenx@hotmail.com

Thanks in advance.

i used to have the same problem ... the problem 100% not from the PC, it's from wiring ... but how i solve --> i rewired everything from phone lines to adsl lines and finally it worked !! 😀

same problem here but already solved it by resetting your modem and router(unplug it), and its working now... :)
