So, you'd still prefer Win95-style interface while everyone else enjoys smooth GUI of Win7/Mac OS X/Ubuntu 10.04+?

Although, I don't like the new "features" of Win8 either. I have my taskbar in Win7 reverted to WinXP style (still nice-looking, but thin and doesn't pretend like my PC is a tablet or something), but that's the only thing I've changed. The Win7 UI is good. I used to hate it because it would be associated with Vista in my mind, but not anymore.

Ignorance of the end-user not a reason? Then what is? You don't seriously believe that the power users are what drives Windows forward, do you?

i find it amazing sometimes that users dont really think about their actually usage pattern, since win7 i have rarely ever needed to dive into all programs, those that i use most often are pinned to the taskbar, if it's not on the taskbar i just punch the windows key type in the first few char of the name and the search functionality is pretty fast in giving me what i want

between pinned items, search functionality and desktop icons (of which i try my hardest to minimize the numbers) i dont think im going be missing the all programs any time soon

Pinning to taskbar = Quick Launch. It didn't change since XP, though now programs' icons there expand into their titles once the program is open.

And you don't need to use "All Programs" in XP either. I usually keep it clean (don't allow programs to install their stupid redundant shortcuts there).

Windows XP still running strong on my desktop until rfactor or something else useful forces me to change. Actually got the Windows Classic Shell running on business Win 7 desktop. My Windows XP machine is actually more responsive than the comparable Windows & in terms of hardware.

Just 4 links? I like simplicity, but you know when there are so few links it will take twice as many clicks to get to what you want. Remember Vista and how many options were hidden under a messy UI? It took 2-3 more clicks to get to the same items as it did in XP. Not to mention, that generic styling is ugly ( I hope it's in "classic" mode in that screenshot)

On top that, all the options on top each windows look like a mess. Looks like it's utilizing the UI from MS Word, which IMO is really clunky. I like some of the new features, but do we really need to see them all at the top of every window?

Granted, it'll probably change significantly before it's released.

If they think I'm going to "search" using "Bing" for a program on my computer, they're messed up in the head! Who is running UX at Microsoft??

Win7 is a continuation of the Win95 layout. Its just shinier and a bit tweaked. Don't get me wrong I wouldn't want it grey... But Aero came about because the computing power is always advancing.

Here is my desktop

If you use the first pane of the start menu to store ''small icons'' you can get it 1 click earlier and cleaner. Just remove everything that's there and put useful links.

Advancements should be such things as high optimization, smaller footprints, more features, and an actual UI that's better, not something dumbed down.

So they went back to the classic start button and people freak out?!? I remember when people where freaking out when they changed it to what it is now... Seems to me like people just want to... com...plain?!!? Cmon guys, I'm sure they will allow people to change the style the way they have always done! Take a chill pill people!

@amk-aka-phantom

so you ever tried right clicking the pinned item??? yeah i thought a quick launch too, then i started to really use it and you be surprised what it has that quick launch dont, for instant it has it's very own version of recent documents for that particular item (right click the pinned explorer item will give you a list of recently accessed folders, you can also pin specific folder to this menu too so instead of having shortcuts to all your most often used folders you only need right click the pinned item and select the relevant folder) and pinning an item is far far easier, simply right click the item if it's running and select pin, no need to drag and drop shortcuts

pinning is far superior to the quick launch, i used to have multi quick launch bars with shortcuts to most often accessed folder and items with win7 and pinned item i have no need for them any more

also forgot pinned item can be accessed via keyboard shortcut with winkey + 1-0

This is gonna be an unpopular opinion, but I quite like the ribbon. Always found it handy in OFFICE, so there's no reason to think that it'll not be helpful in the explorer window.

[citation][nom]tomaz99[/nom]COOL...Two years to develop a geriatrics clock...Hey, what time is it? No worries...let me look at my new WINDOWS 8![/citation]
Yeah, what's with the clock? LOL. I hope there's an option to just make the big black thing GO AWAY...

i will definately stick with windows 7..might try the windows 8 if i get a tablet with windows 8.
Well if you think about all the microsoft releases...
windows 95: bad (can say satisfactory)
windows 98: good
windows me: bad
windows xp:good
windows vista: bad
windows 7: good

did you see the pattern every alternate windows release was bad.. so definately windows 8 will be bad. i think this is an buisness trick..

Nice way to forget about 98 SE, NT and 2K that were all good. ME was horrible and Vista wasnt that bad.

They just need to re-make XP all over again with all the new features of Windows 7-8. XP was the greatest OS of all time, I would still rock it if it had all the latest features but with the XP GUI....Wishful thinking, I know. JMO

[citation][nom]Wamphryi[/nom]It seems to me that the start menu shown in the picture is likely a specific start menu for My Computer (or whatever it will be called) as opposed to the actual Desktop start menu.[/citation]

Either that or a what you would see from a right click.
