oh come on folks, winXP was good, but it was not great, it was great compared to maybe ME (which i will denounce as an OS and just call it the work of Satan lol), but security and stability wise i have to say win7 beats XP hands down and if you ever tried your hand at networking then win7 is the way to go (im not talking homegroups and what not, the network stack in win7 is far superior to XP) and now that 64bit is literally mainstream it's time we left XP as an entry in the history books and move on

@nww02:
Using Android is the worst possible torturous experience one can have, there has been no single day when my SGS don't crash, or get stuck / hung up, or slow down for no apparent reason or doesn't need a reboot at least once every day (I mainly blame OEMs for creating this instability by slapping all that unnecessary **** on it + Google for creating such a stupid model where they don't have any control on the quality). On the contrary, personally I haven't suffered from one BSOD or something similar since the days of WinNT (last such BSOD was in fact due to hard drive failure any way).

-1° is quite plausible since it shows that it's April 8, 2011 @ 5:20:29 am in New York.

I thought they realized having the word Start next to the windows logo was stupid.

Then again, from everything coming out about windows 8 it looks like they are making a tablet operating system on top of the steaming mess of NT and try to shove it down the desktop / laptop market for quick cash too.

You can turn it off... Choice is good...
Only way I would complain is if this somehow increased the system drive footprint even when disabled... Otherwise, you guys have GOT to chill. No way MS makes this interface the ONLY ONE when they plan on this being a ubiquitous OS for tablets AND desktops/laptops...

Wow. Yeah. I guess my head is still in bed. Not only have I thought it was a mm/dd/yyyy date format, which is not the case, but I actually read aug instead of apr. Double fail.

I don't see New York anywhere though? I assumed Canada because of google.ca

It was April, when I got my shiny new SB desktop. 😀

I live in the province of Quebec, Canada.

I now live in Quebec City, but I come from Abitibi. Even there, -1° in August would be almost impossible! But, as I said, I see now it was actually April. Anyway, nice to meet you!

what the hell is so great about that? All this is a a glorified version of something that Windows 3.x had 20 years ago, basic with nothing more then a few drop down menu options.

actually that's not the new start menu. windows 8 has this whole new Metro thing that relates more to tablets than anything else. That's just the old view you can resort to if you don't like the new look.

There won't be a proper Start Menu. It's been replaced by the Start Screen (for desktops as well as tablets).

I thought about it some more and I actually never use the start menu. I have some desktop icons (god mode, programs and features) I use, and games icons are hidden at the bottom with rocketdock. I would happily take a feature rich start menu or no start menu at all, honestly.

I'm not going to get fussy about "window dressing"

This is ridiculous. It seems like a move towards a more Mac-like user experience that "everyone" can handle. Might as well just screw over the people who know how to use Windows well.

when you click on the start button it actually takes you back to the metro UI. There is no list of programs that would normally appear. What a pain in the rear. I hope they fix this before its final release. Tested on developer preview version.
