How do you like that Kenwood? How does it compare to proper SQ headunits?

I love the old Nakamichi units.

My brother's looking for a desktop, he does audio engineering stuff. Right now he does all his recording off a cheap $300 laptop with a Pentium. I told him he should build one.

I'm thinking a Xeon E3-1220V. Any major difference in that and the 1231 and 1241 other than frequency?

Edit: Strange, pcpartpicker shows no compatible mobos with it. It's LGA 1150.

Edit: NVM accidentally had DDR4 selected from previous build.

I think you mean "does" have hyperthreading since they are all Xeons. Anyways, that's probably above his budget. Cheap is really what he's looking for. I devised a few builds.

He specifically says he needs 16GB RAM and a PCI slot (I'm guessing for a sound card). Skylake was a no-no because mobos with PCI slots are so much money.

@Onus: He's looking for a lot of stuff. PCI slot for one thing for a sound card he needs. That's one reason he needs a desktop.

I came up with a pretty good build here, this one I think is best:

@Razerz: thanks for the clarification

@Tiny: I have tried telling him he doesn't need 16GB but doesn't seem to want to agree with me.

Okay.

Well, I installed that Hard drive, formatted it, and moving 63.1 gigs of stuff to it... Used the wires and the case to keep it in place with card board as spaces to keep it away from bare metal and keep it in the "cage".

with my kenwood ddx5901 it can play flac audio files. my duramax makes quite a bit of ambient noise compared to almost all other cars so driving down the road the difference between mp3 and flac are extremely hard to notice. for critical listening i dont think the car is the best way to spend money for sound quality, all i want it to be is loud enough and clear. so as far as sound quality i would say compared to older decks ive owned its just as good in my situation. my other decks didn't have the integration and tech that this one has though so that a big bonus.
