HTC Vive looks like it's going to be released before Oculus is, but the price is going to be pretty steep: http://www.htcvive.com/us/

Hey everybody how the hell is everyone? Its been awhile since i've last been on....Lots of life crap going on. Just broke both my arms in a motocross accident so even as i type this im struggling to reach the keyboard lol. Glad to see this thread is still alive! Im fixing to upgrade my mobo and cpu and ram today from my i5-2500k to a 6700k and some ddr4 and probably the asus hero VIII mobo.

Two broken arms? Hmmm, methinks that was not fun.
This weekend I expect to build my Mom's upgrade; she's got a 970BE on an 870iCafe now, and will be getting an i3-4160 on a H97M Pro4.
I will also upgrade my lab assistant, from an Athlon X4 5350 to a Skylake Pentium G4400; I haven't decided on the motherboard yet, but it will be between a couple of mITX boards, one MSI and one ASRock.

yea it sucked lol 2 broke arms (right arm bone actually came through the skin) 2 skull fractures, 2 new elbows, 3 surgeries and alot of staples and stitches lol. Uh so now im confused if i should buy the 6700k or the 5820k. Im still leaning towards the 6700k for the newer bells and whistles and technology.

If you're not interested in overclocking, and don't mind full ATX (many are building smaller systems now), I just looked at a really nice Gigabyte H170 board...looking; will edit with the model...
Edit: This one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128869 the GA-H170-D3HP. If you're looking for bells and whistles (i.e. future-resistance), it has USB3.1 including both Type-A and Type-C connectors, a Thunderbolt connector, a nice audio codec (ALC1150), and Intel NIC. Its M.2 slot supports both PCIe X4 and SATA SSD connection types. If I didn't have a preference for smaller systems myself, I'd use it. I still may.

well this is what im looking to go pick up in an hour or so

http://www.microcenter.com/product/452548/Republic_of_Gamers_Z170_Express_Maximus_VIII_Hero_LGA_1151_ATX_Intel_Motherboard
http://www.microcenter.com/product/453660/16GB_2x_8GB_DDR4-2400_PC4-19200_CL14_Dual_Channel_Desktop_Memory_Kit
the memory however will be $70 not $99

What do ya think for the whole system? the 6700k seems to beat the 5820k in single threaded situations as well as in gaming too (in some games) at stock clocks. Of course its easier to keep cool also.

I've owned a couple of ROG boards. They're nice boards, but to be honest I've not begun to use the wealth of features they provide. That's just me though.
I wish Sonic Radar were available on lesser boards (I'm deaf in one ear; NO sense of direction for sound). That's the only reason I bought a Maximus VII Impact for Minion.

Edit: That does look very nice though, assuming of course that you've got a solid PSU and a graphics card up to your intended uses.

^ nice choice, good selection of components. Youll be happy.

Heres my build, I figured id share

Are we using this thread for actual systems again now?

My recent upgrades.

Usable desktop in about 6 seconds when booting or rebooting. It's really impressive. This is my old 500GB 840 Evo completely empty after being freshly formatted for comparison.

i want that phantek's cooler so BAD!!! ive read its so heavy though it causes some unwanted stress on the mobo! How do you like it? I keep telling myself i will own it one day! i mean performance it beats in some tests the AIO h100 closed loop cooler. Im partial to air coolers myself and thats got to be the best looking one period!

Phanteks with the Corsair AF fans was the best and quietest high end air cooler Xbit had ever tested up until this article. I don't know if that's changed but it beats the NH-D15 in this comparison.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/coolers/display/noctua-nh-d15_5.html#sect0

It's not as heavy as I expected and it was very easy to install. The easiest of any big air cooler I've ever used.

Plenty of RAM clearance with the TridentZ modules.

Big air tends to beat all in ones in the long run anyway.

I mean a heatsink does not fail with time and a pump will for sure.

In a closed loop setup you just replace the pump and move on.

With all in ones, you just toss the system out.

I say this as someone with 2 all in ones in the same system because of space limits(I could use an air cpu cooler if I need to).

I should note that it will be overclocked soon. I just built it Wed. night so I haven't really had a chance to play with that yet. Maybe this weekend.

I would have gone with the same air cooler, however It is massive and Im a big proponent of aesthetics and cleanliness. However the aesthetics on the Phanteks is probably the best one. Even though you likely wont have to access them, but you would have to remove your cooler to access the RAM?

Yeah I so very badly want a 950 Pro but lack the money to buy one. That will definitely be an upgrade when I get my tax refund. Right now the only upgrades I tend to make to the Dark Knight are that and buy a new monitor. I'm pretty set on the one I want to get which is the BenQ 32" 1440P: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824014372

Have you seen the Cryorig R1? It's not as big as the Phanteks but it cools just as well and in some cases better than the Noctua D14: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4UF1H68938&cm_re=cryorig_r1-_-9SIA4UF1H68938-_-Product

Plus it takes up about 1/2 the space that the D14 and Phanteks do.

That's kind of a myth about big air coolers - they really don't. Most of the time the mounting brackets are designed in such a way that all the stress of the coolers are put on the mounting brackets and not on the motherboard.

I'm saving up for a GPU. I'll probably grab a $700 Pascal or Polaris when the times comes.

And, does anybody know why POST time would increase? As of late it's been taking longer, sometimes about 20 seconds, other times just normal like 7 seconds. Doesn't make sense.

Everything Cryorig I love. It has been a most wonderful brand. I can't wait until their rumored PSUs hit the market, I hope they choose a good OEM.

I'm saving for a monitor. That is my big expense right now - my 2009 Acer should do fine for a while but I really want to go with a higher resolution display. After that then I can see and evaluate how my 970 performs with it. For 1440P I shouldn't need an upgrade but for 4K I might. I cant wait until my car is paid off, then I can really make some new PC hardware purchases that I really want like an Asrock X99 OC Formula and i7-6800K. I also want to start doing some modding - specifically I want to modify the Dark Knight with a black and orange theme to support my favorite NHL team's (the Anaheim Ducks) colors. Then I'll rename the Dark Knight as "Wild Wing".

Plus by then the second generation of HTC Vive should be out.
