The right card for Dell Optiplex 755?

Hey

I've got a Dell Optiplex 755 (SFF...I think) here, which used to have a 9400GT 512MB on it. Long story short, that card was faulty and I can't get it replaced. Its performance wasn't as good as I thought it'd be too, so I've decided to get a new card. Problem is that it's a slim tower model and is of the SFF type, so I can't get most cards to fit in it. The XFX 9400GT I was using earlier was a single slot one (with a round slot above it titled VIDEO, but that's about it). I'm sorry if I sound too nooby, but that's probably because I am. :??:

Here are the details as per the forum guide:

APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: A week or two.

BUDGET: Below $100 (excl. international shipping)

USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: Mainly for running games like Call of Duty, Mass Effect 3 and Battlefield at a good setting.

CURRENT GPU AND POWER SUPPLY: XFX 9400GT

OTHER RELEVANT SYSTEM SPECS: Dell Optiplex 755. Core2Duo 2.66GHz. 4GB DDR2 RAM.

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS
: Not in the USA, so international shipping required.

PARTS PREFERENCES: Whatever works :)

OVERCLOCKING: No idea...

MONITOR RESOLUTION
: 1440x900

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: I did search and browse through various other threads here about Optiplex 755, but I still couldn't get a concrete answer. The main problem being the card needing to fit and whether I should look for a 512MB card or a 1GB card. I'm just looking for a card that runs games smoothly at a good graphics setting. Not looking for full AA or anything, just medium to high will do.

I hope you guys can help me finding something that works! Thanks in advance :)

Cheers

that card would be on par with your old one... and half the price is shipping.

I'd say bump your budget up that last $13 and grab the one I linked. I can't for the life of me find any detailed specs on it so it's possible the bracket will be the wrong size. It will still work though you might need to snip off the end of the bracket in order to close the case.

About running open case, dust shouldn't be too much problem. Just clean it out every now and then. Dust gets in with or without a side, just faster with it off.

Basically, that computer isn't meant to game so there is no easy solution.

My estimates for those gpus are
5670 (or 6670, same card): ME max, bf3 med, COD med high
6570: ME high, bf3 low to med, COD med.
5450: ME...
Hey

Thanks for your reply. I currently live in India.

I took a look at that card you've linked there and it looks fantastic, but I'm not sure if it'll fit inside the CPU. Based on the picture, it looks pretty bulky and much bigger than the XFX9400GT (512MB) that was earlier rigged. Can you please confirm whether it will fit in the optiplex 755 SFF?

Smooth gameplay is all I need...I'd be pretty happy with just medium settings.

And the Sapphire 5670 from eBay.ca costs much lesser (even with shipping added) as compared to buying it locally here.

bleh i don't like that case. so cramped.
is this picture accurate?

what's above the pci slot and under the hdd? empty space? Could you move the hdd somewhere else, like to the floor of the case? Basically, can you make room for a gpu that isn't low profile.

Sorry i can't just tell you if it will fit, but without seeing the enclosure in person i can't tell.

That picture is reasonably accurate, but there seems to be a lot more width in mine. I also dug around and found the PC's bill and based on it, I can say that my model is a Dell Optiplex 755 DT (Desktop model) and not SFF. As for pace to be made...Oh hell, here's are some pictures I took of it:

,

(placed a ruler next to it just to measure. It comes to 9.7 - 10cm in height).

I can spend a max of USD100, including shipping. Monitor's a 19" with 1440x900, got no problems with that. Just looking for some decent gaming 😉 ...

how long is the bracket on your 9400? And how opposed are you to running the computer without the side on? Or cutting a hole in the side of the case?

That would be my solution since low profile cards are under powered and/or expensive.

Aside from that, you might need to use something like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1GB-HP-Radeon-HD6570-PCI-E-2-0-x16-DVI-HDMI-Video-Card-633903-001-/110835112299?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash=item19ce49996b#ht_4901wt_1163

the 6570 not a bad card and will be significantly better than your old one. A 6670 would be better though.

Edit: if you have any computer stores nearby or online ones that ship locally to india, you might be able to get a better price.

Anyway, measure the bracket on your old card and give your opinion of case modding.

The bracket is about 7-8cm long. However, the grater-like thing (sorry...) can be detached, freeing up another 2cm or so.

I'd prefer to not cut a hole in the case...I can use the computer without the side on, however it would be a bit problematic if the GPU was jutting out too much. I'm just afraid that too much dust might collect inside, with the side open and all...

The 6570 looks pretty good. Although it's over my budget...but it's not like I have too much of a choice right now.

I did check the local stores for the GPUs - all of them far too tall. I can scour around and get it somewhere if I have the exact model and make though...and that's what I'm trying to decide in this thread :)

BTW how good is this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/1GB-Dell-Optiplex-GX620-330-740-745-755-SFF-Half-Height-Low-Profile-Video-Card-/160676430137?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash=item25690fc139

5450: ME lowish, bf3 not sure if it will be playable, cod lowish

BTW, while i know the performance levels of the 6570 and up, i'm using this resource for the rest. It's quite useful in getting a quick idea where the card stands.

Solution
Lol, if the 5450 is going to deliver the same performance as my old 9400GT, might as well go and buy another 9400GT locally (surprisingly, this card is available everywhere, no idea why).

I'm still very not sure of snipping the bracket...

The 5670 is way beyond my budget and I couldn't find a half-height one. Although I did stumble upon this...its priced incredibly low (about $95) and I'm still clueless about its height. I doubt it's legit though.

I looked up the model you linked me to and found an easy-import one on eBay India: http://www.ebay.in/itm/ATI-SAPPHIRE-HD-6570-1GB-DDR3-PCIE-Graphic-Card-HDMI-7-1-Audio-DVI-VGA-3Yrs-Wrnt-/140719710172?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_203&hash=item20c38c5fdc It totals to around $96, including shipping. This one's from Sapphire. It's half-height and low profile, so I'm hoping it'll be a good fit. The only difference between this and my earlier card was that there wasn't this blue slot on top (which is linked with a flat grey wire), which is present on this one. Should I opt for this card?

They've also got a 2gig model listed...

Just in case, I'll also look around more in some stores to see if they have it...always safer to buy directly than online, if possible.

Whoa, I didn't know Flipkart had GPUs!

So, final question: Should I go for this Sapphire 6570HD? The price is right and it looks like it can fit in the CPU with just a little tweaking. Should I be looking for any other details or any other GPUs? Or should I order this right now 😀 ?

Alright, I'll order it then. I'll update here (hopefully, if the thread isn't closed) on how it works out.

Thanks again slicedtoad and panwala95 :) !

UPDATE: Just got the Sapphire HD6570 Radeon from Flipkart. It comes with 2 Low Profile/SFF/Half-height brackets. You just have to screw out the bolts from the old bracket (the one that it comes in) and reattach it to the spare LP brackets. Fits like a glove on the Dell Optiplex 755 (DT) and I think it'll work on the SFF model too. I tested Team Fortress 2 and it worked perfectly at 1440x900 with everything at high. I believe that the CD-ROM supplies comes bundled with an overclocking software which is easy to use and helps run high-spec games better. I have not tried this feature yet, but reviews online indicate it works great.

All in all, happy with the purchase, thank you slicedtoad and panwala95 :) !
