Make sure when you set up a laptop, with any client, that you set it to turn off on battery power. Otherwise, your battery won't last very long. So, if you copy and paste your client.cfg file from a desktop to new installs, edit the "battery=no" to "battery=yes"

It should look something like:
[cpp][settings]
username=cunninglinguist
team=40051
passkey=
asknet=no
machineid=2
bigpackets=yes
local=117

[http]
active=no
host=localhost
port=8080
usereg=no
proxy_name=
proxy_passwd=

[core]
priority=0
cpuusage=100
disableassembly=no
checkpoint=12
ignoredeadlines=no

[power]
battery=yes[/cpp]

To answer your question:

This machine will run the SMP client, if it's plugged in and turned on 24/7. Otherwise, it won't make the deadlines.

If this gets used like a normal laptop, you are probably better off to install two console clients.
Just put the files in different directories ( like FAH/1 and FAH/2) and edit the client.cfg for "machineid=1" to "machineid=2" on one of the files. That way each client runs on a separate core.

One other note on laptops, some of them get real hot. I would keep an eye on a new laptop running full tilt for a couple of days, and especially the first few hours. You don't want it to melt.

Good luck.
Happy Folding.

Did everyone see this?

I'm considering building a dedicated GPU folding rig.
I'll have to wait until the client actually comes out.

Anyone have a GeForce 8 or 9 series?

1000 pts per 24 hrs...just need to get it running on my 8800 GS, and soon my 4850...
/<evil meniacle laughter insues>

/<cough cough...pulls pinky out of mouth>

Edit: Added the 8800 GS, the 4850, and an ati 2400. Also changed a the octal to 1 snp and 4 single cores.

I'm folding@home right now. I'm sorry to say my team is 57931 [9th as of today] Too bad I can't be on both teams. Nice to know that Tom's Hardware has a folding team. Keep up the good work, hopefully this folding will save peoples lives one day.

Did my first WU for THG and nothing appears!

What install should i use for folding? Here are my specs:

E2180 2.0ghz
Windows Server 2003 R2 64-bit

I will probably throttle the program to use CPU to 50% if it makes a difference. I use this PC as my file server and need to leave some room for it to serve its purpose.

I just started doing the nvidia client and it TRIPLED my PPD. I have had about 10 older machines going at about 1000 PPD before this. I have a 9600 GSO and it goes through a WU in about 4.5 hours.

I am BIGGER on the team by the by.

I have some sad news and I need help.

I have a PC here at work and my employer asked me to remove the F@H service.

My problem is removing it. At my home PC, I use the program where I have an icon and I can stop it after finishing a WU. Here I have no obvious way of stopping it after it finishes this WU. Or should I just delete and restart the computer.

On assumption that your running windows, try start>run>msconfig click services, find the fah consoles and untick them. restart.

this doesn't uninstall them so you can put them back when the heat is off hehe

though if your employer found them, i am suprise they dont remove them themselves?

Hello,
I'm new to this forum so i dont know how things work. Well I sing in to this forum, because I need help in choosing the right components for my new pc. I'm more of a software guy, so if could someone help me. I'm planing of buying around 1000$ wordth of product (graphic card, CPU, motherboard,.. the hall deal.)
Any sugestion would be greath.
Thank you

yea same here, i started folding on all my computers (3) then i got the GPU client working on my 8800GT and it destroys all 3 of my PC's combined (approx 5000ppd), so i uninstalled folding from the rest of my PC's and only fold on my 8800gt.

brought my rank up crazy fast. was like 700 on toms for awhile, a week of gpu folding got me up to the top 200 and raised me overall into the top 100,000 for folding@home.

i would also like to note that the Nvidia CUDA drivers do not affect game play. I play lotsa PC games and was worried the CUDA drivers would affect something. I have yet to have a problem.

Cant wait till they get the stupid visualization working. I want to see the protein actually trying to fold!

Need more people folding for Tomshardware, their rank has been dropping! :ouch:

Hey. Im new to these forums. Could anyone tell me about or point me in the right direction to find out what THCG is all about?

There are very many posts here and they are all different. I cant just sift through 40 pages. I have to valet cars. Rofl

you should start your own thread in any forum, preferable a popular one.

your not gonna get many responses to a topic with 44 pages of posts and is as old as the hills :0

and i dont know the answer to your question, but i can help point

This time of the year my bill before folding was around :sol: $35.00 - $45.00 a month. With folding my bill for last month was $335.00. :ouch:
