hey tomsanites.

i had started F@H about 4 years ago, but when my old e-machines broke, i kinda quit, but ive picked it back up, and im on your team. i come bearing an x2 4200+. i know it aint much, but i cant find the GPU f@h program anywere on theyre website. (not talking GPU2, just GPU, the one that supported the X1000 ATi series.) but come tax season, ill come bearing an x2 6000+ and a 4870. but, i gotta start somewhere. see you all at the top!

Got my 9600GSO folding now, these things are a beast for folding at a cheap price.

Got the core at 703mhz and shaders at 1757mhz.

Fun to know this is one of the top folding teams out there!

What name do you fold under Proto?

I just ordered a 9600GSO from newegg today. The memory is GDDR2, but that shouldn't make any difference for folding. You can see it here. My ATI card has been earning between 500 and 1000 PPD according to FAHmon.
I'm hoping for 4000PPD with the 9600GSO.
What are you getting?

This is my first NVIDIA card. Is there an OC program that you recomend (preferably one with fan control), or is it built in the drivers?

Well I am not folding non stop, I leave on for a few hours and shut off for gaming (which is often)

i tried using FAHmon but when I give it the folder of the client it says "progress 0%" and never changes... maybe im doing something wrong...

As for overclocking I'm using "EVGA Precision" and it works very well, is light weight, tells temps and even lets you change shader and core speed separately if you want.

I'm not sure if you have to use it with an EVGA card but you can always try.

For the GPU clients (at least for the ATI version), you have to point FAHmon to the data folder, which is usually located in
C:\Documents and Settings\"your_username"\Application Data\Folding@home-gpu\
not the folder in program files, even though that folder has files to make FAHmon think it is monitoring a 0% client.

FAHmon is great, especially if you monitor multiple clients on the same network.

It looks like EVGA precision works on all GeForce cards. I'll let you know for sure in a few days if it works on XFX. Thanks for the info.

Update: EVGA Precision works just fine on my XFX 9600GSO. I've overclocked from the stock 580/1335/500 (core/shader/memory) to 750/1730/500.
My PPD for that card are now 3500-4000 depending on the WU.
It's a nice bump from the ~700ppd my 3650 was making.
My stats should be reflecting the points soon.

BTW check this out:
Team FTL is currently number 89 and will be passing us in 3 weeks.

Apparently, this team started from a crack released for FarCry 2 with these directions:
[cpp]2. (Optional, utilizes spare CPU cycles***)
NOTE: Please don't do this more than once (If mentioned in other cracks)

a. Run FAH.exe.
b. Enter the following:
Username: Any username you like
Team number: 149135
Launch Automatically... Yes
c. Then, close the window.[/cpp]

It seems plausible considering that the fifth highest users name is any username you like.

Discussion here if you are interested.

wow that's a nice gpu/shader oc! what about the mem though? My 9600GT mem runs at 950 stock and its actually rated for 1000... im running it at 1050 atm.

yours should easily get to at least 700 (1400 effective)

I don't game that often, and memory clocks make virtually no difference when folding. The next time I install a game that is more FPS intensive than Spore, I'll probably see what the memory can do. For folding, it's just not worth the extra heat and energy.

As a matter of fact, my next step is to unlink the shaders and start dropping the core frequency. Supposedly, core frequency doesn't effect folding near as much as shader frequency does. I'd happily sacrifice 5% performance for for 8 degrees in temp (which is about 63C @ 771/1782/500) .

Who knows, that might not even be a stable gaming OC, but it works for folding. No EUEs yet.

Well I just started a couple days ago and still really don't know much about folding. I kept seeing it in people's sig's throughout different forums, then it hit me, I saw it here too, so of course I used team 40051! I am just running the smp quad core one for my 9950 @ 3.0ghz. I have read that cpu/gpu is the best combo but I havn't figured out how to do that yet. I just have cpu using up 100% cpu on 4 cores whenever I'm not using the computer. Anybody have any help on how I could do cpu/gpu mix for max points or is what I'm doing fine? The card for the gpu would be a 8800gt - 670/1950mhz.

Welcome dragn! It's great to have you on board.

Here's a couple quick links:

Fahmon is a great utility to monitor your PPD (points per day).
Extreme has the best stats to monitor your climb to the top of Tom's team.
DCsig has custom signatures. The one I am using is called THG9.

The Official forum As a n00b, you are probably better off asking questions here though.
The news (aka Vijay's Blog)

Your quad should be good for 2000PPD or so, but that 8800gt will do an additional 4500 if you set it up. You can run both of them at the same time. There is a good tutorial HERE. I recommend the console version, not the systray. If you set up the SMP client the whole thing should be a walk in the park. I would definitely get fahmon if you are going to have multiple clients so you can keep an eye on things. Good luck, and PM if you need set up help.

On another note, I can't believe how many PPD these GPUs put out !

I ran 3 quad cores 24/7 with the SMP client and felt good @ 6000ppd.

Now each of my 2 260GTXs puts out that, and I'm not even running a CPU project yet. I've got 2 more computers to set up this weekend. I have another 260 and an 8800GT so I'm hoping for an even 20,000ppd.

It kind of sucks really, I spent more time and money managing these damn computers running the CPU client for a fraction of the ppd.

I wouldn't have dropped out this summer, but they made the SMP client such a pain to install that I stopped folding when the old version expired. I don't get why they would make it such a pain to donate your resources.

Anyway, for all you guys that have been folding for years longer than me, sorry but I'm gonna pass a couple of you in short order 😱

who cares? why does it matter which "place" you're in? isnt it just for the benefit of humanity or something... seems a bit petty to me to be arguing over places.

If you check out Vijay's Blog aka "The News", he says
"In terms of a long term vision for the FAH software, our short term goals is to shore up the SMP client. Just as there was a big improvement from the GPU1 -> GPU2 client, we have been working steadily on an SMP2 client -- a version which is much easier to use, requires less donor effort, and scales much better. This really is a combination of a modified client and (especially) new cores. This effort has been going on for about a year and it's far enough along that I'm starting to talk about it publicly.

So, they are working on it. My guess is that as soon as the research actually leads to a viable, profitable drug, we will see beautiful easy to use clients that are excessively promoted. Then we can all sit around and bitch about how cool we were when we used to fold back in the day when it was "underground".

Wow V3NOM, I was just trying to get the team pumped, but your not even for this team... I just started with a weak computer and I'm already the 8th top producer, in ppd that is. Everybody needs to step it up a little for humanity. O yea, and happy new years to all.

Folding under justinf89

yeah, i got nothing against that, but theres no need for team rivalry or trying to be "top dog".. if you have the internet bandwidth, don't live in australia, and don't care about reducing the lifespan of your system, go ahead.
