wanted to ask if I got it right.

1) it downloads a protein/WU
2) it works on it, until it is done
3) it uploads the completed WU and downloads another + adding points

is this how it works? or does it upload data during the duration of the wu cycle?

it only uploads when your WU is done, otherwise people's bandwidth would be screwed as well as stanford's and it would leave out all modem users, which would be a really big hit to them.

New Member here...(Sliderz125 in Folding) been lurking for quite the long time...decided to drop in and help the folding team do a little more for the cause.

Athlon 64 x2 3800+ Oc'd at 2.4 Ghz
2 Gigs Ram
ATI Radeon X1900
and much more....

Adding in a laptop as well -
Intel Pentium M @1.8 Ghz
1 gig of RAM.

My first post, hopefully not my last :)

Ive downloaded Folding@Home to help out but just how much can I contribute without a GPU crunching numbers? My WU is estimated to end on the 16th Dec. I have an E6300 but only an X800XL at this point. The program is only utilising half of my cpu (roughly half of each core), how can i run it flat out?

Dang. I would be cool to plug my PDA into the TV and fold away, albeit at only 620mhz... but it helps.

If I could use the computer at work, I might end up beating most of you combined.... but thats no way to use gov resources.

Sheepish, you're running a dual core processor. In order to fully utilize it, you would have to run two instances. This requires running at least one console version of the program. Follow Stanford's instructions on how to download and configure, but manually bind it to use the second processor core, and you'll be good to go.

There are better descriptions of this configuration in the Software => Distributed Computing forum on this website, or just post back here if you have any questions.

Thanks Cmptrdude.
I now have the console running on the other core (not before wiping my GUI clients completed frames >.<). Using -local to set it up in its own dir but neither it or -config give me an option set MachineID. Is this set automatically now its in a fresh directory?

Also, do i need to keep the console (command prompt since im using xp) open? Task Manager shows the console doing nothing and two FahCore_82.exe running.

/edit
problems solved. I managed to delete another 8 frames before realising the machine ID was in the advanced options. I think everythings ok now.

Ive obviously screwed something up.

After 6 hours the console F@H had reached 50k/500k and then suddenly decided the file written did not match what was expected (or something) and restarted itself over. I then closed the GUI client to make sure my work was being saved but on reopening it I was back at 0 frames. 100 odd frames wasted.

What have I done? 🙁

Sometimes that will happen when you reboot your system. Not often, but enough so to be annoying. Also, it could be that if your system is overclocked, that it's not stable. Or you could have something going on with your memory. Folding is an excellent stability tester.

Good luck.

Sheep, take a look at your FAHlog.txt, which is located in the directory that FAH is in. If you aren't sure what happened, post the last 20 or so lines.
Most likely, it was an early end unit.

I would seriously consider moving to two console versions and using a 3rd party monitoring tool as soon as the novelty wears off.

Happy folding!

finally getting my laptop back online, had it offline for a while because i was trying out linux! hopefully my points output will stabilize, been going on and off lately...

Hay ARA,
What has linux got to do with it??? :? I'm using linux now. :) Posting with firefox in KDE. 😀 Got most of my machines running linux. 8) Would rather spend money for hardware than give it to M$. 😛 You can get a pretty decent dedicated folding machine for the price of windoz. :)

i honestly did try... the problem was that i couldn't get anything to install (i tried for 2 weeks, however, if i get a spare computer i will probably try it again)

edit: Page 62!

You probably already did this but make sure that your second CPU instance and your ATI instance each have their own directory wherever you are stroing them. Then also make sure that each has their own MachineID. They may just be competing for the same data files.

Ara,
Well, I'de be glade to help out in any way I can. :). E-mail me, or we can setup an IM session, even voice if you want. Maybe we can save you some money on OSes. I don't mind at all, happy to help.

I've been using linux for just over 10 years now. It has it's strengths and weeknesses, like everything else. I happen to be a big Slackware fan myself, but it requires a lot of setup from the command prompt. :? Fedora is popular but won't work on all laptops, it is easily confused by some of the special video adapters used in them.

Here is a good link to find out which destribution works with which laptop:

Good Luck.
