You can also look at it from the point of view that they want to see what people run to ensure Steam will work correctly with those other pieces of software and not interfere with them and vice versa: ensure the other apps don't cause issues with Steam.

I'm not sure if you can or not, but I think you can opt out of Steam collecting and sending information to the Steam servers. I seem to remember this, but it's been so long since I installed Steam.

This was an opt-in survey, not the result of Steam spying on users' computers.
I'm surprised that Open Office isn't on that list. I'm further surprised that Groove (a collaboration tool) is; makes me think there are a lot of work PCs with Steam installed on them...

YEP. And that information is for sale.
Guess what; You guys that Bit-torrent might be in for a surprise when you are targeted by lawyers seeking to skin you for the possibility of software pirating. Note in these cases they DO NOT HAVE TO PROVE YOU ARE GUILTY. They just have to have a suspension.
Bit torrent client suspicious? To a scummy lawyer YES.

There's still a few porn sites that require quick time to view clips.

or so im told....

Ummm, it blatantly states in the article that people willingly gave up this information, in fact there's quite an effort involved to send anything to them regarding specs and program info about your computer. It's not some random button on the UI. Fail.

The "possibility of software pirating" is actionable? I think not, LOL!

Most steam gamers probably eschew crApple products anyways. Bang for the buck, I personally love my Sansa Clip.

Why would anybody with uTorrent ever install open office? I prefer the free full MS Office suite by far.

I thought they were going to show a picture of a pile of S*it, = cod mw2 and or the % of players hacking the game and not being banned!.. honestly, EVERY GAME? every game has a hacker valve. Please tell me, why did I buy this game?

actually i didnt find teh quick time thing that suprising , i'm in school for game art design , and in our classes we got a select few programs that are acceptble for turning projects in in our classes we use adope flash pro and adobe priemere for video creatrion (using stills generated in 3d smax) ,with jpeg video , jpeg4,or quick time being the usual formats that work is turned in with.

Most people install it with iTunes without knowing. It's also a pre-requisite for movie previews on the Apple site, which is kind of cool. But, yeah, QT is a big pain in the butt.

If you read at the begining of the article, it says that it was a survey. Surveys are meant to show results and statistics, and all of these people willingly gave theyre information. Valve is not hacking or spying on peoples PCs. They can only see what you tell them.

Wow, only 29% of steam users have ATI cards. I thought more pc gamers would have ATI cards by now, its common sense to pay less for more quality most of the time.
