Yes, another "which card should I buy" post, but at least I have narrowed it down to one model before asking for help! I'm building a gaming system based off of an MSI K7T266 Pro motherboard that was given to me. It will have 512MB DDR2100 RAM and an Athlon XP 2000+ CPU. I have decided on a 64MB TI4200, as it seems to offer the best performance for the money since I run mainly DX8.1 and older games.

Specifically, I was looking at the MSI or chaintech 8X 64MB cards available for around $80 on Pricewatch. Can I mildly overclock either of these brands, and what else do I need to look out for? There are slightly different model numbers for some of the cards, even within the same brand. The cheapest card listed seems to have everything, VGA/DVI/TV/8XAGP in a retail box, but it has "lite" in the model number and I don't want to end up with an underclocked card. I don't care about software included. Can someone recommend the "best buy" among the sub-$85 TI4200's? Thanks in advance!

Jon

Go for MSI, they make the best nVidia chip based cards. If you can't buy MSI, then Chaintech is also a good brand to buy.

I love my Abit Siluro. Overclocked it past Ti4600 speeds with stock cooling and no remnants. Passed all of the tests so far. I did remove the factory thermal compound and replaced it with AS3, though.

MSI is unreliable crap. You want the best nVidia based card with great performance go with LeadTek.

I've found MSI cards very reliable

Couple of people I know, their fans stopped working after a month and had to be replaced. I should have been more specific, but the cards are great.

I had a Leadtek GF4 Ti4200 for over a year and it was great. Have a look at their products too!

your basing that on personal experience.

my personal experience with my MSI ti4200 is nothing but good. i have problems with teh TI4200 *chipset*, but this particular card was physically very well made.

only bad thing was the ram was only -4ns. ...

but 550mhz from 444 stock aint so bad. i can get 575, but i need ramsinks cause after 30 mins i get artifacts.

with a 290 core (need cooler seasons or better fan to go higher... my case runs hot because of my o/c'd Palomino)

After reading some of the replies to my post and doing a little more research, I decided to go with the MSI 8X 64MB TI42000. I was able to track the model number down and found "lite" only meant no extra software. It still comes in a retail box with driver/utility CD, has VGA/DVI/TV out, and includes a RCA/SVHS splitter cable. This is a full featured, full speed, brand-name 8X TI4200 so I figured at $79 shipped I could not go wrong. It just came in this afternoon and I have not had a chance to install it yet, but it looks to be very well built and has the quiet TopTech cooler that also covers/cools the RAM chips. Thanks to all those who replied, looks like I got a great card at a great price!
