im getting a 40 gig harddrive with my new system... and i was just wondering if i should partition it or not.... i heard some programs hate partitions. Then again... i really dont feel like defragmenting a 40 gig drive everytime i do it.
let me know what you prefer.

I usually have two windows partitions. The first one (C:) is the active primary dos partition and contains my windows install and all of my programs. My second partition (D:) is on an extended dos partition and contains all of my data files (mp3s, movies, downloads, etc).

This way if I have to reinstall windows, I can format C: and leave all of my data on D: intact.

My mother never saw the irony in calling me a son-of-a-bitch.

Please read my posts on partitioning UDMA 100 HDD (Kruno). How you partition, it depends what you want to do. If you do not have UDMA 100, having more partitions is OK. If you work in UDMA 100, it might be clever to have 3 partitions: C:\ with the OS (app 3-4 GB having the swap file there as well) D:\ with all the programs and E:\ for all your data.
