I was thinking of buying a Titan fan, because I didn't think mine was good enaugh. But after his articles it seems mine has better performance than titan fans even though they are tvice as expensive.
I think he made Titan rather mad, because if you go to their homepage http://www.titan-cd.com/, they have launched a defencive statment or somthing and are threatning lawsuits. They don't mention Tomshardware though, but it seems likely.

I have read it.. Tom is just objective.. An in this country there`s alway`s a freedom of speech...
And you cant go around the facts...

Win some.. lose some

Well I have always admired Toms courage to state the facts. Can't be long in this business without making somebody angry. 🙂

Even stranger- they look the same but according to tom's heatsink guide (though I wouldn't live and die by that particular article) they always perform worse. The ThermalTake scored dead average in every test even though the reviewer, who never e-mailed me back, insisted on grouping the companies together even though it was obvious that the titan's were the only one of the two that performed poorly. What the Hell! Seriously grouping heatsinks together because they are round is like grouping all other heatsinks together because they're square. I own neither- I have a globalwin, but it still pisses me off. Sorry for that rant.

Agreed, I just put a Golden Orb on my brothers overclocked Celeron and the temp dropped 13C, it is now 2C above ambient. Thermaltake coolers perform well and are very inexpensive. I bought the Golden Orb for $12. They deserve more credit then they were given.

thanx guys, I though I was just going out of my mind (well, maybe I am, but at least I'm not the only one:)
btw, I'm getting the Chrome Orb for my Athlon:)

Edit: final question: the reviewer talks about ThermalTake "AirCooler", which I can't find on thermaltakes site, at least not by that name... any idea which product he's actually talking about??? Thanx:)
Edited by Kodiak on 12/29/00 02:39 PM.

It looks just like a chrome orb. I don't know for sure where the name came from. Have you seen the super orb? It has 2 fans and is a bit taller. Thanks all, I'm really glad someone else pays attention to these things.

oh we're paying attention allright:)
It is strange... the titan and the orb in the review look EXACTLY the same in the picture (blueprint same?:), except for the colour (different material?)
http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/00q4/001211/cpu_cooler-15.html

and yet, they have such different results... weird:)
either the quality of components has more influence than even the basic design itself, OR the review has an error in the procedure/design...

On the other note, yeah, I've seen super orb, and I'm sure it cools somewhat better, but I'm not sure its worth it -- it seems a crude improvement, just add the fan and extend it (as opposed to redesign, changing materials etc). It gets noisy (I think fans are running against each other!), and I'm not sure the last few centimeters of heatsink, being SO far away from processor, actually do anything. And finally, it seems HUGE:) I fear whether I'll be able to close my case! :=)

Agreed on all counts. The super orb just looks wild. I wouldn't buy it, but I would but a golden/chrome orb.

When I bought my T-Bird, I was so terrified of the thing overheating, I bought the most expensive hs/fan I could find...The Super Orb. It is kind of loud, and I don't think that it cools any better than a normal hs/fan, although I haven't gotten it above 111deg F. The top of the headsink never gets warm at all.

Take your PILL,and get some sleep.

thanks for the feedback- I'm glad to hear from someone who ownes the heatsink to say how well it works.

"Are you saying that I can dodge bullets?"

Now can anyone tell me what is good cooling in numbers? I run a 700MHz T-bird and my CPU gets up to ca. 58C (137F)highest. I have the bigger coolmaster fan. Is that acceptable?

It's exceptable, but not preferrable. The closer you can keep it to 40C or in the 40's the better. 58 isn't awful, but I wouldn't like it over 60.

how can you sue someone for a bad review of their product? seems unlikely to me

TBird 800 - Asus A7V 1005a
256 PC133 - Maxtor 45GB ATA100
Radeon 32DDR - SB Live MP3+

Well I don't know it just sttod in their defensiv statment. But being unlikely. Have you checked the news recently? What do they not sue people/firms for these days?

I like to set a limit of 40C on my processor. Duron 750@950. It has gotten to 41 ONCE. I use GlobalWin FOP32, and keep my case open. Oh, I also leave the heat off in my room. It's freezing in here usually.

Just out of curiosity, how many people here leave their cases open?

My TBird-900 runs at 42C with the case closed (and the heat on in the room). Maybe it's just me but I expect the computer to work in my normal working environment.

I actually leave my case open because I too lazy to put the sides on. J/K.

Well after I got my case that has a door, I always have it closed. They say you get a better airflow through the case if you have it closed. Have to have a chassis fan though.
