What do you look for in open-world/sandbox games?
The thing I like most about open world games, is the chance for exploration, at your own pace. Finding new things to do or be astonished at is the biggest draw!

What do you think these kinds of games will be like in VR?
I think that this type of game would be good in VR, however, games where you are in a vehicle will benefit the most. I have played Elite, for instance, on Oculus Rift and it meshes very well together with flight controls and the cockpit location.

1. What do i look for in a Open world/SandBox game?
I would go with a large map teaming with life and quests to do in them. It's nice being able to explore many destinations and interact with NPC's and even killing creatures in the wilds.
2. These types of games will be awesome in VR.

I like really big maps with varying terrain and numerous highpoints to view it all from. There should be numerous missions/quests of varying length available that are not overly repetitive and require some thought to solve. Not all should require combat to resolve. Actions and behaviour should have cumulative consequences through the game. The world should be as internally consistent as possible. While multiplayer can add a lot to this type of game, it should also be playable alone and offline.

I think in time VR will make this type of game much more immersive. However the hardware requirements to make it smooth and responsive enough is still beyond the average gamer.

What do you look for in open-world/sandbox games?

Large map with different environments. Multiplayer/online co-op and PvP. Extensive crafting and/or RPG elements

What aspects of it appeal to you or make the experience enjoyable?

I prefer sandbox games because you have liberty to do as you please. My preferred genre is survival sandbox. I have been playing Minecraft® for over 5 years and have tried many sandbox games. I enjoy changing my world in each game. Looking back and seeing the environment adapted to my needs and wants, having the landscape totally changed and seeing my structures erected all over the place gives me great pleasure. I also enjoy the complexity these games tend to have. Simple shoot em ups or button punchers get boring fast.

What do you think these kinds of games will be like in VR?

I think VR is the future of gaming and probably the way we interact with everyday technology. I think that it will become very immersive and life-like and because of this I would not use it. As it is I can lose myself in hours of gaming. With VR, I would probably be lost.

A gaming environment which is fair and gives a level of protection for all new players, so you don't get "alpha tribes" running around raping new players and using their buildings for arson practice.

Player creativity and expression through crafting and building within the gaming virtual space.

VR is hit and miss right now. With the right equipment and software, it could be revolutionary. However with the complexity of ARK, it may take some time for the software to be in a state to be ported to VR with any success. Also the VR hardware will need hardware improvements to allow for more varied input mechanisms to support the wide number of actions within ARK.

I'd just wait for direct neural implants, so you can play the game directly into your conscious so you don't need to physically do anything, just think what you want to do, before ARK can be fully realized in a VR type environment.

Hi!

What do you look for in open-world/sandbox games?

Action! I really like open world games that have quite a lot of action in it, and by that I don't just mean lots of fights. I like games where you can race cars and blow up stuff! I also really like an open world game with a gripping storyline. This may sound weird, but I want a game that really captivates me as well as a game where I can do other stuff and not just stick to a story line. One of the things I really look for in an open world game is vehicles. Whether these be horses or helicopters, its really important for me for a game to have lots of cool transportation options. It sort of builds atmosphere and its just really fun to run around and do random stuff.

What aspects of it appeal to you or make the experience enjoyable?

I think its the atmosphere of an open world game that I enjoy so much more than that of a linear game. When you are running around an open world, it brings depth to the game's storyline, which I love. I also really like the fact that with an open world game, there's so much content. Not only is there a storyline, but there's so much more stuff to do, which is really appealing to me, especially when you compare the price of an open world game to that of a linear one.

What do you think these kinds of games will be like in VR?

I honestly cannot explain how excited I am for VR open world games. I have talked a lot about how I love a game with good atmosphere and a VR open world game? Well that would be amazing. I also would think that with VR sets like the Vive, the option to have physical interaction would really fit in well with an open world game.

I'm all for free stuff, especially when dinosaurs with laser beams are involved! Ok, maybe no laser beams yet, but I'm sure mods will add them in.

1) It must be large enough that you need to take advantage of all the travel methods to get anything done in a limited time
2) It must be populated with more than enemies
3) It needs to have something that makes it stand apart. i.e. Just Cause 3's wingsuit and tethers, GTA's multiplayer "maps", etc
4) It needs to have some bugs, but nothing gamebreaking. GTA IV's swingset or JC3's wonky grapple failures

In VR? kind of boring for the most part. The best open world games are third person, because watching the character get mangled is half the fun!

What do you look for in open-world/sandbox games?
-I enjoy a wide variety of tasks to do, large areas to explore, and funny/cool items and or scripted events to occur while exploring.

What aspects of it appeal to you or make the experience enjoyable?
-I enjoy the exploration, the ability to pick and choose which missions to tackle first, and the non-linear format of the game.

What do you think these kinds of games will be like in VR?
-VR should make the games more immersive and make the exploration even more fun.

I prefer the open-world side of things over the sandbox game. The organic nature of tackling the "tasks/quests" that appear as I play is intriguing, allowing for more immersive experience as opposed to a more directed experience.

VR should only increase the immersion level and when combined with an open-world design would be awesome. I could see VR also increasing my enjoyment of the more sandbox-like games.

a semi-realistic community(s) with history and lore that makes some sense. when it's shared among them it helps to bring a more open world together for a game.
enough NPCs to make it fun just to meet them and discover information/more quests.
a lot of options for items, weapons, armor/clothing. if it is a bigger map/world it is usually more fun to find more usable items that coincide with the different regions or people.
a long enough storyline or side content to make the growth of the protagonist very noticeable from start to finish.

i could see virtual reality working well in a first-person open world or sandbox game but i've never seen how it would work in 3rd person. i imagine it would be similar. i guess it would depend on how you were controlling your character; with regular gamepad or keyboard/mouse or with contacts on your own head and extremities.
i currently play games like The Elder Scrolls, Dark Souls, and The Witcher series in 3D and both 1st and 3rd person aspects work but i think VR would be more fun in 1st person.
seems it would make interacting with the world more fun and could offer new options for control of the world and your surroundings.
can't wait to see what it may bring for all genres. surprisingly 3D never jumped off like I would have imagined but VR may in the distant future if the prices are right.

"What do you look for in open-world/sandbox games? What aspects of it appeal to you or make the experience enjoyable? And as an extra follow-up, what do you think these kinds of games will be like in VR?"

Playing as a world-building (or world-destroying) demigod in man's cloths. For world-building: Dwarf Fortress, Technic (Minecraft add-on), Fortresscraft Evolved, Fallout 4; games that have more than just "make a pretty building", adding machines that can be strung together to create things more complicated than the parts. For world-destroying: Just Cause series, Prototype. (There's something to be said for tourism/exploration sandbox games. Just Cause, Ultima IX, Fallout: New Vegas did this well.)

VR of course means better immersion. There are still issues with VR though, price and biology being the main ones, but the new googles coming out are a huge leap in a technology that has been stagnant for far to long.

What do you look for in open-world/sandbox games?

Answer: I like a storyline that pulls me into the game and gives me a reason to go search the world. I love side missions that are completely random, or events that happen randomly in a game. I also look for events/gear/caves, just something, that makes me say, "Wow, that is so cool!" For example, I might find a cave that leads to a chest that a random item inside, or a quest that takes some creativity to solve. I like puzzles in games. I hate games that make quests too obvious, but games that make me think to solve the quest/puzzle. Lastly, I like unique items, but they have to be achievable for someone that doesn't play hour and hours. I love gaming, but with my family I can only game casually (when they go to bed for 30-60 minutes). If I can be pulled into the game for 30-60 minutes and walk away feeling like I did something neat in the game, I'm happy.

What do you think these kinds of games will be like in VR?

Answer: I think VR would really add to the realism element. Because these games are large worlds, and are non-linear it would really pull gamers into the world. Now adding scents or vibrating chairs with VR...that would truly be epic!

What do you look for in open-world/sandbox games?
An immersive experience with fun gameplay and a rich world to explore!

What aspects of it appeal to you or make the experience enjoyable?
Giving me powers or attributes that are fun to play with like the powers in infamous or the hook from just cause. Adding dinosaurs doesnt hurt!

And as an extra follow-up, what do you think these kinds of games will be like in VR?
All explorarion driven games have much potential with VR! I imagine this games taking advantage of VR with maps that are not single layered but with multiple levels that you can climb or jump your way through...

Your discussion prompt:

1) What do you look for in open-world/sandbox games?
I'm looking for squad based team play with me, being the player, leading my own team against the computer AI, sort of like the game Jericho: a FPS shooter but with other companion AIs helping out. Some things that would interest me are random sporadic elements, just enough to keep things interesting, but that's hard to do in single player campaign type of games. I would think open-world games are usually better suited for MMO gaming.

2) What aspects of it appeal to you or make the experience enjoyable?
The random reaction of other players if its a MMO game.

3) And as an extra follow-up, what do you think these kinds of games will be like in VR?
Uncertain, I've not yet had any VR experience, but I would hardly think it would make much of a difference.

What do you look for in open-world/sandbox games?
The ability to collaborate with other players in said open world/sandbox. Variety is a definite must for an open world - while there are randomly generated worlds in games today, it still feels too predictable.

What aspects of it appeal to you or make the experience enjoyable?
Exploring new elements in the world, building things from scratch and basking in your own self satisfaction when you pull off something great.

And as an extra follow-up, what do you think these kinds of games will be like in VR?
They would be fantastic, if designed well. Like in sci-fi movies & shows, VR open world may become so addictive people won't want to leave!

What do you look for in open-world/sandbox games?:
I primarily like to to be able to build something, primarily with friends. That something could be a physical thing, like a fort, or somethign more abstract, like an accumulation of items or skills.

What aspects of it appeal to you or make the experience enjoyable?:
The awe and wonder of exploration and vastness.

And as an extra follow-up, what do you think these kinds of games will be like in VR?:
I think VR will definitely add to the immersiveness, helping to pull you out of reality.

I look for games that have goals/tasks which can be used not only a tutorial, but progression to even the mid-game. But I like enough content where you aren't just building more of the same buildings, but have a progression or research tree to build more advanced and meaningful buildings/items. There's plenty more to say, but it's a tough genre to satisfy everyone, or especially the picky ones like me.

-What do you look for in open-world/sandbox games?

A chance to explore said world in its intricate detail. Maps are no good if they're bland and have repeating areas. Areas that are inaccessible yet viewable irk me a lot. Also having new, different and interesting tasks is plus, keeps me playing longer. MOD support is cherry on the cake.

-What aspects of it appeal to you or make the experience enjoyable?

I feel that having some secret areas that are not too difficult to get into add to the experience, along with MOD support.

-And as an extra follow-up, what do you think these kinds of games will be like in VR?

When VR is polished enough to run detailed Open-World games, It would be really interesting, getting to explore new(mostly fictitious) places from the comfort of your home would feel fun, and a lot of time would be spent on exploring compared to non-VR versions.

What do you look for in open-world/sandbox games?
The option to both follow the main quest line or do whatever I want and still be able to have a good time.

What aspects of it appeal to you or make the experience enjoyable?
Random encounters, easter eggs hunting.

And as an extra follow-up, what do you think these kinds of games will be like in VR?
As inmersive as you could possibly think of with massive amounts of fun.

What do you look for in open-world/sandbox games? What aspects of it appeal to you or make the experience enjoyable? And as an extra follow-up, what do you think these kinds of games will be like in VR?

I look for freedom of choice. The possibility to choose which paths to take, how to resolve conflicts, and see real consequences to my actions.

Another amazing thing I look for is how malleable the environment is. Can I build buildings ? Get others to do it ? Terraform the plantet ? Will if affect how people on said planet live and what they feel about me ? Then I'm game :)

In VR, these games should be awesome !

Of course, there's 2 kinds at that point : Realistic games, and God-like games.
In one everything is as realistic as possible. In the other I can throw around fireballs and create new forms of life XD.

I love a good crafting system and the ability to explore and find hidden gems. Quests that send you around the world and help you find those gems are great. varying landscapes and the ability to go underground or high up and get those great visuals help to bring it all together.

I think VR would be perfect for open-world/sandbox style games.

i like when you can explore everywhere
like every building and when there are good landscapes
i think they will be good on the VR

>What do you look for in open-world/sandbox games?
new experiences and new forms of fun.
