I would find the nearest town and build up a good reputation by doing helpful tasks such as defending aquifers from rat monsters and settling squabbles among warring factions.

After that my inherent wanderlust would drive me to explore a scenic nearby quarry. Given that it is a 5 minute walk from town I'll venture in with only a bb gun and good intentions only to be instantly killed by a swarm of giant clawed beasts.

What would I do when the vault doors would open come the year 2277? I wouldn't notice. I would still be on my PC trying to complete a huge map of Civilization on Marathon. So, then I would most likely die because some other adventurer came up behind me and murdered me to steal the three caps I had in my pocket. Just for three caps. And as I lay there, bleeding out, I reach out to my computer and say, "Just... One.... More.. Turn...".

I would find a retro-futuristic car, and spend my days fixing it up so I can drive around the irradiated landscape, taking it allll in.

Well, of highest priority, I would find myself a nice, loyal pet (preferably something that won't try and kill me, but you know, times will be tough...).

Then I'd need a secure place to settle down with said pet, a nice house with at least 3 walls and part of the roof left would do me.

After that, I'd obviously go looking for the most over-dramatic and lethal weapons available in order to defend myself... from my own insanity!

And of course post-apocalyptic life wouldn't be complete without some wonderful radiation poisoning!! I'd make sure I get myself some of that before I die of some unknown disease or horrible accident..

And that's how I'd spend the day or two that I'd live; with such a brilliant (terrible!) plan!

Run.

Run as far and as fast as possible.

Whatever monsters lie in this desolate wasteland can't be worse than the madness within these walls of metal and concrete.

They told us it was safety. Safety for ourselves. Our family. Our livelihoods.

To live on as the world crumbled.

But inside the vault... that's not living. Inside is the world that crumbled.

War never changes... but people do. Trapped underground for countless days, months and years.

War never changes...

Build a factory of bottle cap and get rich! C'mon it can't be so difficult to make bottle caps with future tech like that of the brotherhood...
Run to the History Museum to get Lincoln's repeater: best than most high tech stuff...
Drive a tank full of sand to deceive raiders while Megaton settlers run away...
Ops, I must be messing up ...

I would swing the vault door open, start the PIP-BOY audio player, and crank Louis Armstrongs "What A Wonderful World"!!

Think I would try to build me a creazy heavily armored and gunned vehicle and start proclaming myself the new leader.

Than I'd probably die by the first eatable thing lying around. (Living an entire life inside a vault one doesn''t know the real dangers of radiation and mutated corn or canned chili lying around for decades)

First thing?

I'd go check if my 286 is alive and well. Ain't nothing gonna keep me from classic gaming, not even the end of the world. Too bad they didn't allow "frivolous extras" inside the vault....

Having not played any of the Fallout games, my approach will necessarily be pragmatic. How much time has passed? I'm 55 now; is it next year, or ten years from now, or longer? If longer, why have I not croaked already? Am I alone, with strangers, or did I get to safety with other members of the prepper group I'm in now? If the latter, we're good; we've got tools, seeds, basic skills, and collections of manuals on eReaders and other non-volatile storage, and enough solar stuff to keep these things (and our radios) charged, while we scout an area and build. Is the world teeming with natural life, or essentially barren everywhere? Any civilization out there, or just animals (some on two legs)? Reconnaissance would be a Big Deal, as we make our way to a likely place to make a fresh start. What we find governs what we do.

I would definitely take a leak by a bush. Those Vault toilets can be pretty nasty. And a lot of players like to drink the water, so I wouldn't want to pollute it

I would emerge from the vault, find that robot from the fallout 4 trailers making him sort out my garden and the house, then look a round for loot make my bed so me and the robot can get down and dirty if you what I mean. And then of course he would be my bitch and carry my stuff around when its too heavy for the amount of weight my character can handle.

The first thing I would do is put on sunscreen. After living in the vault I would be even more vulnerable than usual. Even without the bonus radiation that would await me I would be extra crispy in no time. You cant wear proper armor with that kind of a burn and you can't make new friends looking like Goldmember.

First thing I would do out of the vault? I would find the highest/nearest elevation to get a feel for the Bostonian wasteland and head for the nearest settlement. Hopefully they're friendly and will trade with me. If they are raiders...I'll just have to lay waste to them and appropriate their goods. After that, I'll set out for adventure.
